Would you? I was thinking of knocking back my CZ's 550 .416 Rigby to a handier length. I understand the velocity loss and increased muzzle blast but would it be horrid if one went from a 25" barrel to 21"? Thoughts Y/N?

I appreciate the long barrel on the bench, handling it otherwise - not so much. I'm determined to hunt with it this year. Just accept that this is the optimal length for this pig?

I have a 416 Rem Mag in a custom shop 700 Remington wearing a fluted 21” barrel. The gun is quite light, 7.5 lbs scoped iirc, and handy. It balances well and is very accurate. There is no way you would miss the 50fps +/- by cutting it back.
Do you intend on reattaching the front sight?

Split the difference, go 23" and see how you like it. You can always chop a couple more inches off later, but it won't grow back if you cut it too short.

Maybe without refitting the front sight until a final verdict....

Heck Yes, I want functional irons still. Ordering Talley QD's and Leupold 1-5 with a German #3 from Clay this week... Good to read your positive remarks! Need to see if Black Art is still even open.

Wouldn’t popping off 4” of that heavy a barrel adversely affect balance?

Potentially, depends on how the balance on the rifle is for you. Once the shorter barrel is obtained the balance will be a bit more on the receiver, but your mileage will vary. If you have a small stature you may find that easier, you also have to account for the stock weight and where it is positioned in the stock. Balance is different for everyone IMO.

Chopped the barrel on my first .416 from 24 to 22. Lost 50 FPS with my hi speed load. Way better though. Had a CZ Rigby, big gun and long barrel but they feel kinda weird with shorter barrels.
