M5A1 Stuart going on the block at RIA...

The M3 and M5 family are quite small inside. I slithered into the commander's hole when I was about 30 yrs old, and found it would have been a tight squeeze for anyone! However, the interest in small armour is that maintenance work is just a little less difficult than on a bigger heavier tank. They ship with fewer permits or clearance problems, and they are a "cute" size.

Any WWII is small inside and tight hatches. I got to spend 2 days sliding in and out of the tanks in the Littlefields Collection (when he was still alive). You quickly realize ergonomics and crew safety really didn't fit into the equation, until the later Sherman with the 2 hatch turrets. The T-72 not bad, Conquer TC position is cool and the Chieftains drivers position is great. The Matilda was not to bad, the Comet is awful as is the AML 90 armoured car.

I would love a Fox armoured car or a Saracen. I love the Saladin, but the drivers position is tough to get into.

People were smaller in those days as well. :) Betting they picked tankers, like pilots , from smaller individuals as well.

Grizz

I'm pretty sure they did just go with smaller individuals for both armour and aircraft. I sat in the CF-100 Canuck at the Warplane Heritage museum a couple of weeks ago. I'm 6' 2" 225lbs. It would have been physically impossible for me to fly that thing. The canopy hit my head even without a helmet on. Sometimes being of large stature is a big disadvantage.

The Swiss Army used to sell their old Panzer 68 for the value of the scrap price. Too bad I can't even afford that, or the garage to park that thing, or the gas to run it :(
