trying to get the top lever off a "Miroku 500 Charles Daily Top Lever Removal" .... is there a trick to this? I'm not 100% convinced that it is actually a screw.

the slots are VERY narrow, I've had to grind down a couple of screwdrivers to fit properly and no dice moving it at all. Been hitting it with penetrating oil for about a week now... still no love.

is it actually a screw(well bolt I guess)? is there a trick?

-thanks

are you trying to take the whole lever out, if so remove the spring will take some pressure off maybe, and a really good quality screw driver, ie gunsmith drivers not Canadian tire ones

The receiver is currently completely stripped EXCEPT for the top lever - I'm a big fan of Grace screwdrivers. I had made a couple of specialty bits from some O1 tool steel, but they didn't fare much better.

If I could find a replacement screw I'd probably try an impact driver and/or drill it out + screw extractor .... but can't take a chance on damaging the screw unless there is a replacement on hand :(

GOT IT!!!

thought I would try a cold chisel ground to profile - to a file to it and too soft ... then I remembered a couple old chisels from my uncle's tool box... grabbed one of them ground it to the exact profile and the screw just popped loose! :)

Glad I kept passing over the impact driver!

Good job with the chisel, I probably wouldn't have thought of that! Minimal damage to the screw slot too.

Actually no damage ... that is what I was working with to start ... a couple swipes with a needle file and it will be good as new :)

I'm surprised too - generally in my shop chisels start at around $40 so grinding one up for a single use isn't generally an option.

I'm also quite surprised at the quality of the steel in this chisel - I might just grind it back to profile & start using it :) (well, after the action get polished and put back together)
