Stupid question time:

Norfolk county (Ontario) is one of those silly counties that requires you to also have a “municipal licence to hunt rabbit and pheasant” in addition to a provincial small game licence.

I have an acquaintance who never gets one with the reasoning that “Have you ever in your life seen a county bylaw officer tromping through the woods? And even if they did bust me, the fine would be a fraction of the money I’ve saved all these years...”

Which got me thinking, what IS the bylaw fine for failing to have a county licence? And this isn’t me scheming by the way... just wondering how true his sentiment is. They don’t list the bylaw fine amounts on line that I see.

Anybody know?

I think the licence is to help fund the hunting areas they stock so not buying one in my opinion isn't the brightest idea and yes I was once asked to produce mine.
No idea what the fine is.

When chatham had one we had to drive to aylmer to buy it. Ive had a co ask for it. It is part of the license and hunting without it would be the same as hunting without a license. You could loose your license your gun your truck. A co has more athority than the rcmp

A township beside mine expects you to have one too. I was told it was to fund the release of pheasants, which they have not done as far as I can remember.

I have had a CO, an OPP officer and a local police officer ask for township rabbit/pheasant licenses.
Atleast a half dozen times they specifically ask for the township license.

Ah, so it’s the CO who asks for it then. I assumed that since it was a municipal bylaw, it would be outside the CO’s realm.

Call your municipal office and ask a clerk. I had a DRPS officer ask me for one. When I told him they were no longer sold,he didn't believe me,so,he called he Clerk's Office and I could hear them laughing at him in the office. Most municipalities haven't sold "township" licenses for Pheasants and rabbits in decades even though they're still listed in The Summary.

When I lived in Niagara growing up it was the same thing but when I tried to buy one the first year I hunted the clerk looked at me like wth are you talking about? She could not even find one to sell me! I never inquired ever again. I’d be shocked if most counties listing the requirement even sell any?

Not on their website.

I bought my first township license in Norfolk, 47 years ago. It cost 5 dollars back then. The last one I bought was maybe 7 or 8 years ago and it was 10 bucks if I remember correctly....pretty good deal I think, considering the funds go toward a pheasant stocking program they've had for all these years. That said, I know a lot of people don't bother buying the license and I haven't heard of anybody being charged.

I did not know municipalities even had licenses... That is good to know moving forward...

Is there one area I can find all the municipalities that have these licenses and where to purchase them? Or would I have to check every single municipality I hunt in..

In the Ontario hunting summary under small game seasons, there’ll be an asterisk beside the affected zones. And I think they started shading the wmu maps too.

As for where to get them, just call the county administration office. Usually they’ll have them for sale at certain LGSs
