S&W 27 Mfg. dates
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson
has approximate dates for the N serial prefix, including the 27, at:
1981 for N820001-N932100.
According to the same reference, your revolver should actually be a 27-2, which has a host of differences from a 27.

S&W dates of manufacture
A Smith & Wesson factory letter costs $30.00 ...one of the great bargains of all time.......Colt charges a large sum plus an increased fee if your firearm turns out to have some historical significance or rarity.....
Current backlog on letters is several weeks but they do provide a clear statement of when and where a gun was shipped and how it was equipped....the letter will list special order options or production details which might make a 27-2 rare..or at least uncommon...
it can be nice to have for a historical piece or your trusty shooter...

If you open the cylinder jacky the model will be stamped on the crane. It will say 27, 27-2, etc.
You know that is what I like about this place. A guy starts one little thread, asks what seems to be a simple question and learns a PILE of stuff about his new gun.
My gun is a 27-3. Maybe that will narrow down the year.

Your model 27 should be stamped on the frame under the crane. It will be stamped 27-2, if that is what it is. Open the crane and read the model number, including suffix, from the frame.
