Ruger #1 30-30 and 150 SP ?

He was asking why he was using the reloading specs for tubular magazine rifles

I know what he was asking... I just don't see how it entered into the question asked by the OP... nowhere did he say that he planned to use data for a tube fed lever action.

... I also have a few thousand Hornady SP, they also group well, I just wasn’t sure if the much tougher SP would expand at 30-30 velocities, reports here are that they should, the Nosler ballistic tip would be better, but I have the Hornady’s and lots of LVR powder so that’s what I want to use.

The load I used with the Hornady 150 SP was 39.0 LVR @ 2.800"... it worked very well... pretty much as you would expect from a .308 with 150's.

I shot four does with that load... it was very effective... all shots were between 50 & 100 yards.

On the other hand that is perfect range for the 170 FP, But I doubt the deer would know the difference, but for out to 200 possibility the SP has appeal.

A .30/30 M94 with 170 Silvertips would have been fine, but I was on a overgrown field watch and 250 yards was a possibility... I was completely comfortable with the No.1-A and that load.

30/30 brass is as strong as any. One should have little trouble driving a 150 to 2500 fps in a No. 1. GD

In the handbook for shooters and reloaders P.O Ackley has the 30-30 ai doing 2700fps with 150's, 2940 with 125's. It is also mentioned it will be fine in lever actions.

Any load data for driving a150 around 2700 would be appreciated, Speer’s website lists 38.2 of LVR. Compressed for a MV of 2512 in itself quite acceptable, and 39 grains shot well in my #1.

39.0 LVR = 2600 fps out of my No.1-A with the 150 SP.

It would be for the 30-30 ai. My earlier comment said that’s what I would ream it to.

That’s good enough for me, and that load shoots accurately in mine as well. I think this subject is settled.
Now anybody want to discuss loading the 220 RN for Walrus defense?

Personally... I'm a proponent of medium to heavy"ish" but not extremely heavy "bullets for caliber/case." I believe there is a tipping point based on case capacity regarding bullet weight... while I would and have loaded 220 RN's in .30/06, I would not stuff that bullet in the .30/30 case, even in a No.1... I feel the law of diminishing returns kicks in before reaching that weight... but that's just me... I would enjoy reading about your results.

Slamfire is your man for launching "spuds."

Well... sourced another No.1-A in .30-30... finally! Still have a hundred rounds that I loaded a few years back for my other No.1-A .30-30. I am disinclined to give up my No.1-A .303, so will try the Hornady 125 SST's and Nosler 125 BT's in this one to provide some delineation between the two rifles.

I mounted a scope and sighted in the old mans new #1 this afternoon. What a nice rifle/cartridge combo.
He is shooting the tsx 30-30 bullet and leverevolution powder, shot surprisingly well.
