Spot X

Looks like they finally caught up. The two things where they fell short before were: no 2-way comms, and forced annual contract. This at least makes them worth looking at.

I think the InReach network (forget what it is called) still has much better coverage, but I would say this is no longer an "apples and oranges" comparison as it was before.

I just bought the Inreach. Tried it out a day ago in my backyard, amazing how quick and accurate it is.

Using the earthmate app is quite easy and you are able to see maps where as spot your not. I went tried and tested vs a new product eventhough I was tempted with the new spot, then again I was tempted to buy the mini Inreach also.

Personally the only thing I think that spot has on the Garmin is changeable batteries. Otherwise I felt Garmin was superior even if a touch more money.

I spent years saying that this stuff was too expensive but had to have the best gear, rifles and optics, last year I finally realized that spending money to save a loved one or yourself is worth it's weight in gold. Personally I feel it's the smartest choice I've made in a long time.

Let us know your choice.

I purchased a Spot X and returned it before using on the advise of a friend.
He purchased 2 for his outfit and sent them back after a week.
Long wait times for sending/receiving messages, 20-30 min each way, left him less than impressed.

I have used the Inreach a bit and they work well. I'll be purchasing one shortly.
Just have to decide if I want to get the SE or pay the extra for the Explorer with GPS.

There is also the new Garmin Inreach Mini that was just released. I like the compact size of the Mini version and it has enough functionality for my needs.

I had a very bad experience with SPOT a few years ago, left a bad taste in my mouth. It showed me "message sent" confirmations of "I'm OK" for 8 days in a row when i was on a 350 KM long wilderness canoe trip on the Clearwater River northern SK-AB, but they were all false positives. My brother in law almost called search and rescue several times when the SPOT unit went silent at his end, but was talked out of it thank goodness. That would have been a couple hundred thousand in expenses I didn't want or need.
My Delorme In Reach has worked perfectly in Northern BC, Uzbekistan, and Northern Sask-Manitoba-and the S border of Nunavut. Saved a moose from spoiling on a fly in hunt just S of the Yukon, sent for the float plane a couple days early when the weather turned unseasonably warm. I like my Delorme.
