Anyone use these barrels before? Looking for a barrel with removable chokes for my auto 5 magnum. Found these on tradex, Verney-Carron Hastings Wadlock Barrel (straight rifling) For Browning Auto 5 in 12GA x 3 Inch Magnum. 28 inch with Ventilated rib. They worth $400? I have never heard of straight rifling before.

I have one with straight rifling ..... Hastings barrels are well made .... fit and finish is pretty good.
However I find the straight rifling to be a bit of a pain ... I normally pass a brush on a drill through my barrels for cleaning .... can't do that with those Wadlock barrels .... :-(

It's shallow, rounded rifling intended to keep the shot column centered in the bore & prevent any slight spinning of the payload as it heads out. Lots of folks swear by this rifling type for shooting turkeys and for card shooting games.

Hasting claims 7 to 10% tighter groups with their Wadlock barrels.
The straight rifling is supposed to stop the wad from picking up random spin in the barrel.

Personally, I can't see a difference .... :-(

B.S gimmick! Ruger made a single shot trap a number of years ago with a rifled barrel. When it was first brought out outdoor writers wrote it up as the next great evolution in trap guns. Well it was a huge failure. Rifling a barrel for birdshot is a gimmick.

It ain't a gimmick fer turkey hunters & card shooters. Ruger goofed by putting the thing out for trap folks...dumb move.
Here's a typical card shootin' gun. Whole different game than wing shootin'.

If you want all your projectiles to come out in a single file row buy a rifle. It’s a sales gimmick and obviously some turkey hunters and card shooters are sold. A scope on a shotgun loaded with birdshot has always made me laugh.

Rifling is no good for patterning waterfowl shot
Cheers

If it is a straight rifled shotgun barrel as stated in the title. it is excellent for long range patterns. Straight rifled shotgun barrels are designed to keep the plastic wad column from spinning so it exits the barrel with no spin at all and releases the shot column with no spin.

Hastings make a beautiful barrel of the best quality. I really liked the one I had.

And you patterned yours with steel shot?? How did you keep the grooves clean??

Thanks guys. I found a used, newer auto 5 barrel that takes invector chokes. Curious about the straight rifling, but not enough to gamble on one for $400.

Smart man. These wadlock barrels are nothing new. I had one that came with a 1100 rem many years ago and it would do nothing I could not achieve with choke tubes in a smooth barrel . With steel shot it didnot perform as well from my experience with one
That was a wadlock 1 and they say there is a wadlock 2 now but I have no clue if they are different
Cheers

I see ye have no experience with the card game. Really big pots of cash can be had in this sport and the way many of the shotgun builds perform with 2-2-10 loads is impressive to say the least.

Only card shooting games around here are meat shoots... Turkeys and hams....

Wish I could find a Hastings fully rifled 20" with rifle sights :-(

AFAIK,24" is the shortest rifled slug barrel with open sights Hastings builds. I put one on my Rem 870 Wingmaster for both Moose and Deer that delivers 2MOA rifle accuracy to 125M with 12ga 3" mag sabot slugs. Hastings Paradox barrels charge around $400 for them. I think they're well worth it,especially, for our "shotguns only-no dogs" Deer hunting WMU. My hunting buddy uses a Hastings barrel on his Browning A5 for waterfowl and swears by it.
