30-06 is boring

If that were the subject, I agree... it has always been my choice for the "Only one NA rifle" threads.

I was mostly just responding to this:

.30/06... one rifle that does everything... and does it reasonably well... yes, that is boring. From the 125 AB & 130 TTSX in the mountains and on the prairies to 200 SP & 220 SS Partitions on big bears, moose and buffalo... you scrifice little to the ideal choices for each scenario... yup... boring.

By pointing out that those same bullets can be loaded in any of the other 30s as well so its hardly a unique advantage. I'm actually not overly convinced that its an advantage at all, just pick a good one or two in the middle somewhere and go hunting.

The good news is bear season will be upon us soon and there'll be something else to do.:d

Some people seem to take offense to the term “boring”. Boring doesn’t mean ineffective, unreliable or inadequate, it just means....boring. Going back with my Honda Civic analogy, a Civic is very reliable, gets you to work and to the grocery store without fanfare, not overly fast or powerful, there’s millions of the on the road, it’s a great car. But the Honda Civic doesn’t make too many people’s top 10 most exciting car.

I'm sure you could find millions of Germans, Japanese, North Koreans/Chinese, moose, bear, deer and elk that would vehemently disagree with you, if they could, OP.;)

Well decided to bring my “boring” 30-06 for our sheep hunt. I bought some factory Hornady ELD-X 178gr, and what a surprise, my 30-06 has never shot this good. We also had a close call with a sow and a cub on our hunt, and let me tell you, I wont carry anything less than a .30 cal in the mountains. 30-06 has served me well on my first trip of the year.

From a moose kill, not a griz. My 30-06 and ELD-X work together quite well.

interesting Thread!
i always said they were Boring too, about 10-15yrs later since i bought my first big game gun, i got a 30-06....... boringly deadly LOL

proberly a reason why they claim it as one of the best all rounders, i guess!

It’s a great caliber. Took a grizzly with mine. Very capable and handloading can really turn it into a awesome performer. I have a 150gr TTSX old moving at 3015fps. Nothing I can’t take with that.

About 20yrs ago, I succumbed to the 300WM hype, but it proved too exciting for me. I got 180's shooting really well at nearly 3200fps. My point of impact would change when I changed shooting positions. Very interesting. A 'learn to shoot' issue I'm told, however the groups were generally good (1/2moa from the bench up to 4moa standing) - just in different spots (vertically) on the target. I traded it for a 30-06 - which hits the same spot without regard for how I'm holding it. It's also lighter and more portable.

Just boring enough?

That was a rifle issue not a cartridge issue.

In 45 years I've had just about every caliber come across my shooting and reloading bench, but I still have my first 30.06 and use it for hunting every year.

Is 30.06 boring? Some guys might say titties are boring, but consider the source.

im to sentimental, if anyone in my family line had firearms and i received them, they'd hang with pride in my gun room, or be used during hunting season to make memories in the hands of my kids
