Unique Farmingdale barrel stamp

[contaucreek]

I noticed on my Farmingdale rifle that "caliber" had been spelled wrong. If anyone owns another Sharps repro could you have a boo at yours please to see if this was a one off or???

[chasseur]

Yes that's way it is spelled on my SHilohs sharps as well.It is not spelled wrong it is just an old way of spelling it

[contaucreek]

Makes sense if that was the period spelling, thanks.

[val45]

CALIBRE is the FRENCH spelling of CALIBER

[freire]

CALIBRE is the FRENCH spelling of CALIBER

And a few more languages.

[chasseur]

Old English spelling as well

[Sharps '74]

I just checked my Farmingdale Business Rifle and it is spelled "calibre". Looks like Wolfgang Droegge knew proper spelling.

[green]

Colt also used "calibre" on their arms.

[chasseur]

It is also marked that way on the Big Timber made Shiloh Sharps as well

[Leg]

Old English spelling as well

It’s the current english spelling.

It was apparently a common spelling in the US prior to 1900.

[Sharps '74]

Just another "anglasizing" of the mother tongue, one of many.
