Chief calls to end moose hunt in B.C. following wildfires, habitat loss

on the guide outfitter comment. I realize many folks work in that industry. I myself have dabbled in sports fishing guiding and had a great time on the rivers chasing steelhead and salmon and pulling fish outta the salt off the west coast. So I don't have a full on hate for it all but I do have a very keen sense of the industry and know that most of it is not even owned by Canadians, let alone British Columbians.
I have nothing but good will and support for guide businesses that are owned and operated by Canadian citizens, who's employees are Canadian citizens and the money generated from said businesses is staying in this country. The rest..... can piss off

I agree on that point, though I'm not sure the majority being foreign owned is an accurate statement.

I’m thinking these wildfires are going to be producing some fine habitat for moose and deer when they green up in a couple of years..

industry, including BC's forest industry has been raping this land with zero concern for decades. I live in a mill town, 80% of my aquaintances are mill workers and machine operators, my closest friend's son is a senior forestry manager.... a big shot as they like to say. His words to me about the common practices that have governed the forestry industry in BC is do what we need to do now.... let them worry about the damage in 50 years when we're all retired. If you believe the forestry/gas/mining game is any different than that you are seriously fooling yourself.
Resource harvesting in british columbia by corporations has done more damage to fish and wildlife stocks and habitat than any sector of the sporting or aboriginal harvesting groups combined. Again, if you believe in a different reality...... well.... I can't help you.

Yes,

The same bullsh*t logging practices take place in Sask.

It's better now as the use to leave poplar and birch stacked in huge piles left to rot because no one would take poplar or birch only spruce and pine.

The stumpage fees are ridiculous....so for the trade off of jobs they are allowed to rape the land.

Some area s have been allready logged 2 or 3 x.....and there is very little "old growth" / virgin forest left.

What regrows on their "planted" areas is a nest of jungle bush so thick that eventually no big game will live there once the cut grows back into a twisted jungle of dense poplar

It's a absolute CRIME what they are doing to the Boreal forest!!!

Our Moose seasons have been cut back in Sask as well.

White man= Rules and regs

1st Nations = No rules (honor system), brown....it's down!, Season? That's something you put on the meat?

Anyways best advice to the guys that are pissed off....just do like alot of others are doing ....find a friend who is Treaty and go hunt and fish with them. The rules are so vague that guys have been doing this for years and C.Os do not seem to care when 3-4 white guys are camped and hunting with a Treaty. As long as your only there to help with retrieval and processing you cannot be touched.....just do not get caught driving for them, shooting, or holding the spotlight and your good to go.

Exactly. Fire suppression is a human invention, fire is an important part of nature. We just do it to prevent loss of life/property. I would think the chief should know this...

Me and buddy witnessed a moose kill last August. Saw them earlier driving around then we stopped on our way out ..as they had a younger bull down.
So ..No open season, No LEH season at that time
Traditional hunting territory?? Sure if you have a pickup to drive up the Connector.....
Walk up in the past??? I call BS.
These guys looked not much different then me and you..

Anything and everything happens up the connector I was on that route with work for 4 years.....dont even want to get into it!

At least the Morning Star has the balls to say FN can hunt year round. Funny, this morning I was varnishing my house exterior and suddenly "roadblock" popped into my mind.

It's gonna get ugly and in large part because a large percentage of our population wants to live in the city and doesn't drive farther than an hour and a half to get to a provincial park. They have no idea what is out there and can easily chant "ban / stop / enough" once they get home having experienced nature.

I would not suggest the first nation-or metis do mot have treaty rights, I'm just suggesting common sense prevail on some issues. First nation continually trying to stop legal hunting and fishing by non first nation tax paying Canadians.... will not bring harmony.. it will just drive a bigger wedge between all parties. And just because you have a legal right to do something doesn't always mean you need to do it. We all need to get over the blame game, no one should say get over the past but at some point we need to move past it and strive for something better than its someones fault. Would it be so bad to have ALL hunters have to report kills for conservation?? or have seasonal closures for ALL hunters to conserve??

Very well said.

For accurate conservation, why not pass a law to make it mandatory for all peoples, including first nations to report all big game harvests in Canada. Lol, think of the resistance that would cause.

Ya I hear you! but they would be first to say no! and not do it! You got that right!

Don’t know how to post a link, but Williams Lake Tribune reporting yesterday that 2 roads in the disputed area had cattle guards pulled and blockaded by band members. Also reported that Forestry came in later today and replaced the cattle guards. Rcmp patrolling the areas...

Just a thought, I wonder if a board made up of government and indigenous peoples could come to a decision on an all inclusive hunting season scheme. At the moment, I fear many of the decisions made are being made by bureaucrats that do not hunt, and have other agendas, like appeasing antis, and getting votes. Indigenous peoples at least are hunters.
The system we have now simply doesn't work. A system that ignores racial interests would be a good start.

Yes, dreaming in technicolour right?
