Hello all,
The Lee Enfield is in the safe, the Mosin is on its way, so now its time to find a Mauser K98k. What are my chances of finding a minty specimen that has not been electro-penciled, sanded, refit, assembled from a parts bin, touched up, etc...? Is it a fools errand looking on the various vendors websites for such a specimen? Will my pen run out of ink writting the check? What are the chances of finding such a beauty and what kind of $$ are we talking? Should I start readying myself for the land o' compromise and learn to appreciate the arsenal refurb?
Thanks for your input.

Your answers:

Yes, yes, not very likely, and for an all matching Kar 98k that is not a post war make or refurb, you're talking at least $1000, probably closer to $1500 (if the quality is there.)

An all original, untouched, never rebuilt K98k in near new condition is very rare The way things are going, $1500 would be a bargain for such a rifle. A couple of weeks ago I watched one in VG condition sell for $1900.
There was a very nice East German rebuild in the EE recently for $650. The East German rebuilds are considered by some to bethe best of the lot. The Norwegian rebuilds in .30-06 can also be excellent, and are available from P&S. You could also keep your eyes open for one of the Portuguese contract rifles. Some of these are in fine condition, and are priced less than one that was German issue.
Keep in mind that some 14 000 000 K98ks were made; they are not rare. But premium specimens are uncommon.

You should get some giant novelty cheques.

I think SKScanuck has hit the nail on the head. Would I want to shoot a rare, minty K98k? Probably not, but I will shoot a much cheaper Russian capture till I run out of ammo. So I guess it's time to start looking at refurbs. Is there anything to avoid in the land of the electro-penciled?
Thanks
