Hey guys. Looking for a cheap entry-level scope with acceptable glass and a zero that doesn't wander.

Currently trying to decide between a Prostaff 4-12x40 or a Diamondback 4-12x40. Any thoughts on these? Also open to other suggestions. :)

I've had both, and truth to tell, I love the Vortex! The optics are crisp and clear, the warranty is unparalleled, and I love the option of being able to zero the turrets. You're good with either one if you buy new. I had problems with some Vortex scopes in the past (both bought used) but the replacements have functioned flawlessly.

Both have excellent glass. The big difference I notice between the two is the reticle. The Nikon reticle is thinner. Also, in low light it turns to a brown color that is easier to see. The Vortex reticle is thick enough that it can cover the target at long distances. The thickness may be an advantage if your eyesight is not as good, though. My preference is the Nikon.

I have a Nikon prostaff 4x12x40 on a .303 Brit I hunt with, I have had zero problems with it. Would buy one again without a thought, no experience with vortex so I can comment on them. Nikon has great glass for the price.

I had a diamondback and the cheapest nikon I have is a prostaff 5.

I'd take another prostaff 5 any day over another diamondback.

Really?

I find vortex bdc nice and thin, with the nikon's bdc with its circles on top of each other very thick and cluttered.

Vortex sells a excellent warranty and they also sell optics. I've own/owned both but I prefer the Nikon glass over the Vortex. I no longer have the Vortex. As for warranties, the best warranty is the one you never need.

Vortex's BDC reticle varies based on the max magnification of the scope. On my 1.75-5 the reticle is way too thick but the same reticle on a 2.5-10 reticle is MUCH thinner. Google images is your friend here but I'm willing to bet the 4-12 Diamondback has a very thin reticle.

Have had both in 4-12 and in 3-9x40 models...still have the Nikon. Very short eye releif with the vortex. Glass on each is decent but I liked the Nikon better. Nikon has adopted the same no fault warranty.
