Old rifle found, looking for information

Hey guys

I found this rifle in an old wooden case and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it. I can see some hallmarks on it and it says enfield 1863. Is it worth anything or just good for a wall hanger.

The hammer cocks and drops as it should so I would imagine it would still fire.

I'd say it's an pattern 53 Enfield rifled musket, unless it has a breech then it could be a snider enfield converstion. Pics would help obviously, but depending on condition of everything it could be worth a few hundred to a thousand dollars.

If you not posting pics give a better description. How long is the barrel, how many barrels bands, bayonet lug etc etc.
 
Indeed a snider Enfield; sporterized. It is worth something, even if only for its parts (the lock, the breech block, both valuable for folks who restore such old firearms)
 
That "thing" on the end of the muzzle make me think that rifle was used as launcher of something with tube on the end of it.Is "thing " made of leather?

Actually, it's the 1866 assault rifle. The Snider-Enfields were issued to the British Army in 1866. And the fire rate was 10 shots per minute! Remember, that was the first breech-loaded military rifle used by a major power.
 
Sniders have been fired, although not for pinpoint accuracy, at rates up to 18 rounds per minute. I have done it.

Ten rounds a minute gives you enough time to get the critter onto a decent-sized target.

This is an early Snider, having the pin-locked breechblock and doubtless an iron barrel. Only the Mark III of 1867 and later, had the thumb-operated locking bolt and the steel barrel.

Folks can laugh if they want, but the Snider was, in many ways, the AK of the 1860s; it could put a lot of lead in the air in a short time and do it with an expectation of some semblance of accuracy.

MUCH better than 3 rounds a minute!
