CCI CB Killing Power

At 10 feet they seem to work ok for birds BUT PLEASE WEAR EYE PROTECTION!!!!

If you have an old .22 have a gunsmith remove the rifling and apparently they will work great. I think you can also get a smooth bore .22 from Savage.

i was shooting a 44 mag win 94 just off my porch yesterday, the neighbours never said boo.

besides for CBs, has anyone tried those 22 shotshells? i would assume that the pattern would be pi$$ poor (not to mention the small payload. but would they be effective on birds inside a barn? say within 15 feet.

I never seem to get great accuracy out of them, seeing them hit the target is pretty neat, you know where the bullet is going before it punches the hole, I guess if they kill racoons then they should kill a skunk, probably start spraying like a sprinkler though?

In my experience they are quite accurate. As far as killing coons, I have had good results but occasionally mixed. 80% of the raccoons were one shot kills but for whatever reason sometimes it can take up to 5 or more shots (all accurate) to kill them, not sure why.

..... 'Tried the "shot-shells" a few years ago! Rats with glowing eyes and teeth like a T-Rex ! OK, I exaggerate a little ! Anyway, the shot-shells where totally ineffective ! 'Would have done better to have just farted ! 'Ended up clubbing the little buggers with the butt ! ..... David K. ....:p

I had a similar experience with "TARGETS" at about 10 feet!! Might as well been firing blanks, the shot pattern was about one pellet every foot and a half!!

Totally useless!!!!:bangHead:

Matt_P, they seem to have been designed exclusively for smooth-bores; otherwise, what bill_c68 said tends to occur: wide-spread...

Is there a preferred brand of .22 shotshell you folks like to digest? I've got Rem's now, but I'm really looking for the CCI's.

22 shotshells?

I had the pleasure of testing a few out this spring. Utterly useless unless at extreme close range. Granted I was using them out of a pistol, but
I shot at ranges between 4 and 8 feet. Here is a vid of a 12G shotshell getting toasted at close range.

Here is a Dynapoint box which was shot at 8ft.

I suppose it would kill small birds in your garage or something (the point I guess) but from what I've seen, a pellet gun would be 10X better.

Shot some CB shorts in the back yard today and now there are 2 less noisy magpies to listen to. The gun I used has a 26 inch barrel and its quieter than the 177 pellet gun. FS

Just fired some CB longs out of a 16-inch Henry AR-7 barrel, and from a Nylon 66's 19-inch barrel. Not as quiet as the very-small "snap" of the Rem 512 Scoremaster, to be sure - though the lattermost rifle's barrel is longer.

The shorter-barreled rifles produced a kind of semi-loud "plop" from the CB's - it was a new noise to me, but still much quieter than HV's from the Rem 512.

well I have killed five crows now with the CB long, at ranges out to 43 yards. there was two other crows that flew away after I hit them for sure, but those were mainly due to shooter error  just about every solid hit in the upper body or head is bang...err..pop flop :D

And while youre at it, does the CB short have that much less stopping power, or are they almost the same? In looking for something with the most killing power and best range, with the least amount of sound possible. The least amount of sound is the most important.

I have no idea how would they work on grouse, but there is already a lot of debate regarding the ethics of using rifles, nevermind the use of underpowered ones.

Probably a slow death for a gut shot gopher, but a head shot ruffie....well there is nuthin unethical about the best meal you will ever get in the bush:D I thought that is what those underpowered cb's were made for!

They will not blow a hole in your barn. That is about the only good they are. Remington made a smooth bore .22 a couple years ago. Pattern was reportedly better. I know a few who use them for killing trapped magpies and squirrels at point blank range.

You might be just right. I got some Remington Game getter today. The very nice fellow explained that these are special underloaded just to make sure that the HP doesn't blow too much meat.

I know everyone here talks about headshots, but in the bush I rarely see anyone shooting for the head from more than 10 m away. There's just not enough range time to hit a coin-size target @ 40-50m, or it's range time with some expensive heavy bbl rifle that never gets taken in the bush.
I was guilty of that myself last year, when I got a new toy.... a Savage FVT and played with it all summer. Hunting season coming, I got my folding 10/22 and went on a trip with it (topped with a red dot) . Needless to say I noticed that my plans for headshots that year heve been ruined.... the setup was just wrong.....

Unless I spot one at a long distance along a cut line or trail, most of the ruffs I get are probably under 20 feet and most are about 15 feet and if I have a witness I will always go for the head. No shame in missing the head, but if I accidentally body shot one and there are no witnesses I will claim it was 60 yards and offhand:D In any event when I go for ruffs with a .22 it is one of the few times I prefer a solid to a hollow. The very few times I have ground shot ruff with a shoty, they have been close enough to take the head with minimum damage to the breast meat. If I ever blow one to #### and there are no witnesses, I would probably claim ruff was on the wing and it was my ultra fast reflexes that centered him. Back to the topic. cb's? I think that they would be ideal for head or body shot ruffs for the pot.

If you are 22 short nuts you can buy a 22 short bolt and spring for your 10/22. Comes with a short mag.

Otherwise they are a semi-auto novelty. In bolt actions, like my son(s) marlin 915's, they rock. As for killing power, we are talking about high transfer of energy due to their low velocity and less hydrostatic shock. They work.

Chickens? Aim for base of neck, for the most part you will hit base of neck, or upper back, almost always ending in a one shot kill and no breast meat waste. Anything else similarly sized and non edible, aim, shoot, it will die in 22 ranges.
