So I’m looking at a few rifles and am trying to decide which one to get?
- Troy par 308
- Tikka T3 and then add a mdt stock or something similar
- Ruger gunsite scout

I already have a semi auto 308 and a .223 tavor. Just looking for a general purpose bush gun/hunting gun that’s a bigger caliber than a .223.
The semi auto 308 is a bit heavier and more of a blind gun or bench shooter.
 
30-30 has worked for a long time, and still does. Some other, less mundane choices might be Marlin .444 or 45-70.
 
Seriously, you guys would choose a .30/30 as a general purpose rifle over a .308!!?? IMHO, the Ruger Gunsite Scout has much to offer, but in similar, lighter, platform is the Howa Alpine.

The bush that most people frequent today is dotted with burns, clear cuts, logging roads, power-lines bogs and muskeg, and rivers and lakes. All of these "interruptions" give the hunter better opportunities to spot game at greater range, but also a requirement is needed to make a shot that is beyond the capability of an iron sighted .30/30. A .308 carbine fitted with a low power variable scope would be hard to beat for that kind of work.
 
You seem to like slightly tactical type rifles, by your choices.
The MDT stock won’t make your rifle lighter btw.

Why not sell whatever heavy semi auto you currently own and get on the Stag 10 bandwagon? It’s .308, semi and can be around 8lbs.

Why not just get a T3 CTR? Been eyeing those for a bit now.

The OP stated he already has a .308....
 
I do tend to lean towards the tactical style rifles. I already have a semi so was looking for bolt or pump with the Troy par.
T3 Ctr could be an option for sure. I had forgotten about that one.
I like the idea of the scout rifle just to mix it up a little but not sure if I would like the forward scope mount. Although a strike Eagle 1-8 would probably work nicely on it, I think ��
 
i would go the gunsite ruger in 308. one can never have too many 308's. bolt is a little gritty but will smooth out in time and appears strong enough to beat the deer with. i also have a 2x7 ziess on mine in the ruger rings. i only use the five round mag. ten is a little much for hunting.
 
I have it on good authority from Bob Milek that there is no such thing as a bush rifle. That being said, if you're fighting your way through heavy bush you will want the most stream lined rifle you can get so you wont get snagged up on thorns, branches etc. A Browning BLR might suit your purpose.

Yup, he also stated the .308 was pretty much a bench gun, and he wanted a general purpose rifle. A .30/30 is good at what it does, but it fills a niche that can hardly be described as general purpose. My definition of general purpose is a light weight hunting rifle, capable of taking game up to 1000 pounds, out to a quarter mile. If a .30/06 had been one of the options, I might have checked that box instead, but the .308 is capable enough. The good news is that if he already has a .308, he might already have dies, and components for it.

Semi auto barrel 18.5” min for N/R. Manual action min 26” for N/R. No min barrel length in manual action for N/R.
