Weatherby’s Red-headed stepchild?

I’ve owned .257 and .300 Wby in the past and they are fine chamberings. But there is one Weatherby that seems to get very little love. I’ve been curious for a while and Clayton from Prophet River helped me scratch the itch. My new 7mm Wby (MK V ULW) arrived today along with 100 Norma brass and Redding dies. I have a box of 160gr Partitions and a box of 175gr Partitions. There is some MRP on hand as well.

Any fans of the 7mm Wby on CGN? If anyone has a pet load with MRP and 175 Partitions to share, then please share!

After I’m done with this I may just have to test the .270 Wby with the old IMR7828 and 130gr Partition combo too.

I want one.

I thought the red headed stepchild was the 220 Weatherby Rocket, no belt and no venturi shoulder.

Yeah- I’ve only ever seen one of those. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a hunter using a 7mm Wby - everyone, myself included, has the Remington version. Some really cool folks use the 7x61 S&H or Mashburn.

Like most Weatherby calibers it hits close to the upper limit were adding scoop shovels of powder accomplishes very little except really quickly shot out barrels.

Perhaps the 7stw is exactly there in this bore. Either way excellent calibers with not much to choose between.

The 7mm Wby is not a 2.85" class case like the 7mm STW. It's closer to the 7mm RM in power (2.5" vs. 2.55" case length, all .375 H&H based.)

Pretty reasonable cartridge, not overly overbore. Expensive brass, but if it turns your crank it's a fine choice.

So you know absolutely nothing about it. Excellent.

I have used one in a Sako Hunter rifle from the 90's. Love it, its been my primary deer rifle for 20+ years with the VX3 4.5-14mm on it. Ballistic twin to the 7mm Rem Mag but, in reality, is a bit superior for reloading with the longer neck. Its a bit of a stretch to say its a better number than the 7mm Rem mag but, as a reloader, I like it a tiny bit better and the ballistics are really identical.

I had one before i started reloading. There wasnt enough velocity difference to justify the cost over a 7mm rem mag when shooting factory loads
That said reloading will most likely open the gap but i settled on a 2506 and 300wm and moved my 7s along

The 220 and 7mm are thew only Wby calibers under 340 that I haven't owned and shot. The 7mm should be good though and if your to believe most load data, you should be able to get a 100 fps edge over the rem mag.

If your 270 Wby is anything like mine, it will love 130 grain bullets and 7828!

Well, it's great to be though of as cool since I just happen to have a 7x61 SH in the collection. :) It's an FN action with an Apex barrel and shoots very well too!

I've had a couple 7mm wby's and 270wby's, sometimes its great to be different.not much difference in ballistics really between the rem and wby , both are wonderful cartridges. I had hoped wby would chamber the vanguard in wby calibers from 240wby-340 wby but not yet.... come on wby get your sh*t together and chamber more wby calibers

By not making the 270 and 7 mm Wby's available in the Vanguard, Wby is contributing to the slow death of their own product.

I have a Dumoulin Mauser in 7x61 S&H. Its a great cartridge. But I've also owned two 7mm Wby's, two 7 STW's, and a 7 Rem Mag. Of them all, I prefer the STW. - dan

I've got this one that my dad had built on a BSA action in 1961. If you're into walnut and rust blue.

And me :) . My 7x61 S&H is in a model 68DL Schultz & Larsen. It 'got the call' a couple of years back for my Antelope hunt in Alberta :d . I've mentioned it in past posts, I have three Schultz & Larsens, as/the three cartridges shown on the red cover of the old Norma reloading manual. The three, a co-operative effort between Norma and Schultz & Larsen, are the 7x61 S&H, 308 Norma Mag and the 358 Norma Mag :d:d:d.
