Hello

I am looking for advice on a good value for money 12 g o/u shotgun in 3 inch. I’m looking for a field grade gun - I have a semi auto but I’m training a retriever and would prefer an o/u to easily prove safe. Any suggestions would be welcome - was thinking CZ but not sure of the quality?

Huglo cz is decent
The churchill ou guns have been running well at my local skeet club
Any used browning or winchester 101 would do. Older field guns often had fixed chokes

The CZ Redhead is made in Turkey. You will be paying more just for the branding. Your safest bet is an used Citori or for a bit more you can get a Silver Pigeon or Onex. Problem with cheaper o/u is not only the quality and performance but the fact that they depreciate quite a lot. I can tell you that every Browning and Beretta o/u I have sold (15) I have made a profit on them.

I'll second Brybenn's comment. I ran an Akkar Churchill 206 Silver for a few years and was impressed with it for the money I spent, fit and finish was very good inside and out, never had a FTF, it even tolerated Cheddite primers. CZ is decent. However, you can sometimes find a used Browning or Beretta in around $1000 that would be a decent investment. I'm currently running a pair of FN Winchester 101's, the Ultimate Field is around $1500 new at Bass Pro, I've had no issue with mine as of yet, I've put about 800 shells through them so far as well, so can't comment on long-term durability as of yet. Being an FN, one would expect it hold up decently though.

Funny you should mention the 101's Maritime Storm, there is one in the EE or was early last week that might be right up the guys alley.
I really like the look of a 686, but never could warm up to them in fit and feel.
They are trim , point well and balance , never could go the next step though and not really fare to knock them.
Suffice to say fit and feel is the second most important feature when considering an O/U.

I have a O/U Churchill Akkar Orcap from Tenda... paid 925 new IRS a fantastic shotgun. The fit and finish is excellent and it works great even ran it in the pouring rain and with a light towel wipe it was perfect the next day. It comes with 5 chokes and is 2 3/4 & 3". I'd buy the same shotgun again without question. My only issue was that it was tight like prom night the first time I put it together.

Browning Citori and Berretta Silver Pigeon are amazing shootings but much more expensive. You can get used but you'll have to hunt out the barrels etc that you want and still will be paying 1k+ for other peoples cast offs. If you can find a great deal on one you won't find better but for the budget shooter I felt the Akkar Orcap was plenty of shotgun and side by side with the CZ redead seemed of equal or slightly higher quality for less money.

I did a fair bit of looking before I bought a new spare 20 ga field O/U for myself and the kids...esp if they want to shoot a round of skeet or clays too.
I currently have a couple Browning's for my sporting clay ventures...a beautiful 625 and CXS 20,... but I really don't want to drag those thru the brush after birds, I'm afraid of the dollar signs falling off them LOL...

I settled on the Webley & Scott. Been around for a long time in the UK...these are being built to a price point I would assume, but the quality appears to be way ahead of the CZ, Canucks, Pointers, Stevens, Mossbergs and the Ruger red labels too. They got good reviews.
Annnnnd...being on sale with 400 bucks off the reg price of 1299.99 sealed the deal for me. 28 inch barrels on both..also 3 inch chamber. Comes with 5 chokes, choke case, wrench, take a nice down case included !! They have them In both 12 and 20 ga too !
Couldn't believe the fit and finish on these guns, and the wood (walnut) is awesome...satin finish...looked like what many others call a a grade III or IV walnut !!
I like them sooo much, I'm honestly considering a new 12 ga in the same gun.

I honestly don't think you'd be one bit disappointed in these beautiful O/U guns
The sale is still on at Ross' place ((gun dealer . net ))

That's my .02 worth...rounded down means squat, but I thought I'd mention them to ya.
Best of luck in your search...that's half the fun of wanting a new toy !....Kevin

I'm looking for a O/U that won't break the bank, and after some research narrowed it down to an Akkar Churchill. I have yet to see any negative comments about them from someone that has actually owned one. Get to see the positive feedback from the owners on this thread.

I have owned and shot many CZ guns over the years and after their firing pin issues were sorted out they have become a very reliable and good shooting gun .
my mini Bobwhite in 28 was an awesome pheasant gun and I shot lots of ducks and s few geese with it using Bismuth
i never had any issues with any of my CZ guns as far as reliability goes .
the only thing. Did not like on them wad the cheap finish
