The M-14 pattern magazine latches at two points, the AIA magazine at one. The bodies are essentially the same dimensions. If you alter the AIA magazine, adding a hole for the second latching point, you have created a magazine intended for use in the M-14 type rifle. Holes could be drilled all over the magazine which would be irrelevant to latching into a M-14, but that little square hole just down from the front edge is a functional part of an M-14 magazine. Sure, it will still work in the AIA, but the modification was made with the intent of causing the magazine to fit an autoloading centrefire rifle.
The legal 10 shot magazine in a centrefire semi auto situations exist because the magazines involved were made for other firearms, and work without alteration. If an unaltered AIA magazine will function in a M-14, the legality should be the same as exists with Beretta, Ruger, Marlin and AR-15s.
I'm surprised that no one has reported yet on whether an unaltered AIA magazine will function in an M-14.
