Who else has an MG 34 308 conversion kit?
I got my 308 kit today.
The barrel seems a bit skinny, especially compared to the original.
The belt was split into 5 round pieces. What's up with that?
I thought full belts were allowed. Am I wrong?
Any tips or tricks I should know about?
I have the BRP kit that IRunGuns imports - it’s great! A couple of thoughts:
- yes, the barrel is a thinner profile near the middle - probably has to be a bit lighter to maintain the barrel recoil and unlock characteristics with the lower recoil impulse of the .308 round compared to 8mm. I love the German-marked barrel extension - very well made.
- BRP ships this kit to California and other states with magazine capacity laws that apply. In Canada, pre-1945 belt designs are exempt so long as they are not reproductions, so use original German or Yugo belts and you can go 50 or even 200 rounds. Use links like the M60 and you’re limited to 5 rounds in theory. The BRP kit includes a feed tray spacer for links.

Part 4 (3) (2):
“(f) is of the “belt” type consisting of a fabric or metal belt, is not a reproduction and was originally designed or manufactured for the purpose of feeding cartridges into a automatic firearm of a type that was in existence before 1945”
- the BRP kit includes a feed tray adapter for the shorter .308 round that requires drilling - I didn’t install this and have never had a feed problem, so maybe try with the unmodified feed tray and you may be OK.
- you have to replace the rear feed pawl - 5 minute job with a punch - feeds both .308 and 8mm with total reliability after that.
- without the feed tray spacer, you can chance calibers by swapping barrels in less than 10 seconds - it’s awesome.
- older German MG34 belts hold the slightly larger diameter .308 rounds less tightly, so no feed issues. Lightly lube each link with a barrel brush and gun oil.
- you may need the smaller diameter booster cone with .308 - my 11mm cone works as I have the lighter German firing pin spring installed in my bolt.
Enjoy - let us know how it goes...
