SLR tips, tricks and observations

Loctite makes no sense. You need to undo this screw to take the receivers apart for cleaning, so its something that will be tightened and untightened relatively often.

thats what purple or black loctite is for - low strength holding and repeatable removal. Just a thought to work with a novel problem

I retapped my upper and put in a new helicoil as I was having the same issue. They did a poor job of tapping the receiver, looks like the tap was dull, and not very deep.

Where did you get the helicoil?

I'd be interested in getting replacement bolts and helicoils.

I feel this is the weak link for the SLR, AND thats why I did the repairs myself and stocked up on more helicoil and takedown screws.

The helicoil is a 1/4-28 and the screw is 1/4-28 X 3/4”. I bought a helicoil thread repair kit that includes a STI tap, an insert tool, and 12 helicoils. The screw is a SS socket head cap screw and are very hard to find. I was able to source some from Brafasco, but they can also be had from Ackland’s Grainger.

The helicoil kits are available from most tooling shops, and Amazon.ca.

The SLR is a complete piece of ####. Worst $1,000 I ever spent. I feel the vendors (who should have known about its design "quirks") owe everybody their money back. A bolt catch pin that cracks the receiver when installed? Unacceptable.

Finished my build and am very happy with it. Purchased from CSC and the finish was good. The marks on the photo are from my paw prints while I was at the range. Very tight barrel to receiver fit which yielded superb accuracy results. Installed the trigger backwards (sear first) and had no issues. Will not work with any of my metal mags but no problems with MDT or Pmags. BEV block worked great as my reaction rod was to tight for my liking in the upper receiver. Not sure about the bolt catch pin cracking issue as mine had no issues installing. Cannot wait to shoot it out past 100m in the next week. Parts list is after the photo. This is my gopher gun hence the PRS stock and bipod.

Looks killer. What’s the cause of the issue with the metal mags?

They are hard going in and hard to get out. The MDT and Pmags go in easy and almost drop free. I have not done any polishing of my magwell but there is a fix I have seen if you want to use metal mags.

Metal mags need the corners in the upper to be squared off. Lower drops free metal mags easily

I will take it of your hands so PM me on a price.

Wow, Great looking rifle. You have already found out the positives for this fine NR black rifle.

Hi guys!

I need to know if I'm the only one having stupid troubles with my receiver kit!! I'm on the verge of pulling my hairs off right now!!

First off, it seems MDI forgot to put the charging handle locking notch on my upper...

Also, it seems that, either my buffer tube is a bit too long, or MDI didn't let enough space on their lower for us to install the buffer tube ''inward enough''. I can't install my upper if my buffer tu be is installed properly.

If I want to be able to install my upper I have to back it off one thread, which makes it impossible for my buffer tube to lock in place like it should:

It really seems like their quality control is hit or miss. Some guys get a good one and some guys get sh%t. I'm glad I cancelled my pre order. I'm never doing pre orders again. You wait forever for a product that may or may not be ok.
