I was attempting to remove the butt plate on my k98 and since it was rusted mess one of the bolt heads sheared off and the shank is still in the butt end. I now have no idea how to remove the shank, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get a small size drill bit and go slowly in the middle of the bolt, then go wih a one larger till you can put something inside and turn it out. Thats one immigrant way to do and 100% will work. If you want a fancy canadian way to do it then i hope someone has an idea!

I’ll give that a try it’s been very hard to stay in the middle of the bolt though as it didn’t shear with a flat face

cut a slot in the stem and unscrew with a screwdriver

I don't think I will be able to drill it out without damaging the stock I only have about 3 quarters of the shank to work with due to how it sheared and the bit keeps slipping. What would be the best tool to cut a slot with?

Use a reciprocating saw and sporterize and shorten the stock.
Stock Sculpture!
Cut right through the buttplate screws just to get them out!

My other idea was to use a hole saw and just cut out a small chunk of wood surround the screw then plug the hole with wood dowel and make a new hole. I don’t know if they make hole saws small enough though

Use a center punch to give a starting point for the drill bit. Small bit first, then larger one. Get a set of screw exrtractors (Princess Auto has them,) and use them to back out the shaft.

Okay I got a hole started using a metal carbide 1/16" bit and then widened it by going up to a 3/32 bit. How deep should I make the hole to use a left handed screw extractor? Also does it matter that the hole isn't perfectly on center?

If you have a small enough file, tap in the tang and twist out with a wrench.

Turn inward a bit first to budge it and then start turning it out, if it jams screw it back in then go out again.

If that fails cut a slot as suggested, or if you have a welder put a nut on the stub. I dont like the idea of coring out a section of wood and gluing in a plug.

The shank doesnt protrude past the wood so cutting a slot is bound to mess up more than it will fix, I am at a loss here

take it to a mig welder man he can touch it a few times ,,,build out a tit on it ,,,the heat will help as well wd 40 around the screw,,,,protect the stock with wet cloth ,,,or buy a small plug cutter cut in around it chip out wood and mig out it will work good luck........

Yeah I think my next step is a gunsmith or a machine shop of sorts. I don’t want to mess up a piece of history over a bolt, could a gun smith handle this? Or should I go to a welder?
