Looking for the best advertised deal on the Stevens 200 7mm 08. Best that I can find at this point is at SIR for $339. I thought these rifles generally sell for under $300. Also, will purchase .223 if available.

note: have been watching for same used/new in the exchange forum.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
TD

329.99 on Wholesale's website. Go to Savage rifles and for some wierd reason the Stevens 200 is in the rimfire category. Cheapest i ever saw was Wholesale when they first came out at 319.00.

I think the best I have ever seen was $329.00 at Wholesale sports. I think the cheapest I ever saw them was $319 last season.

I looked at them but when you can buy a Tikka T3 for $650, I just couldn't go for the Stevens. I had a Stevens in 270 they are fine rifles.

Just a side note, I picked up a Rifle Basix trigger for my Stevens 200 and it's sweet. This is my hunting rig so the Rifle Basix works well for the job. If you're doing bench rest shooting, pick up a Sharp Shooter Supply trigger.

Win,Bill...

Thanks for the heads up. I completely forgot about Wholesale Sports.

604,

I looked into that trigger but want to stay away from spending any additional monies on this particular rifle. ie..bedding, trigger, free floating..ect. I would rather spend $400 or so on a decent Leupold or Nikon and still have a very decent economical hunting rig.

I owned a 7mm in the same last year and it shot consistant MOA groups off a bench resting on my folded jacket, so I can't really justify a trigger job for the application I will be using it for.

However the reason for the 7mm 08 is that I like the 22" barrel (rather than the 24) and the short action is appealing. Ballistically(is this a word?) speaking, I am more than impressed with it's numbers. I think, from what I understand, the .308 is one of the most efficient cartridges ever designed.

Thanks again for the tip!

Cheers!

The trigger on a Stevens isn't terribly complicated to clean-up yourself, and it does feature several different adjustment screws.

Getting one down to a crisp 3lbs with no slack, takeup or overtravel is relatively easy, and offers a vast improvement over most out-of the box factory triggers. (And, if you somehow manage to botch it, there are a bunch of aftermarket replacements available).

The only thing bedding/free floating costs is time, the round stevens receiver isn't terribly difficult to bed.

Also, filing/sanding/painting the stock offers a HUGE improvement to the aesthetics of the rifle, get rid of those nasty molding lines. Be careful not to dull the checkering, or it'll look like a noob-job (or you could just bondo the checkering and get rid of it altogether)

haven't gone to the length of bedding mine, but i did sand it, paint it and adjust the trigger. i also pulled the butt plate and filled it with expanding foam. It eliminaltes the hollow sound without adding weight.

hey could you guys please post links for this wholesale sports and this SIR palce i was looking for a cheap 12FLV in 22-250 or 223

Not allowed to hotlink to non sponsoring dealers but if you add the www, you can find them at:
wholesalesports.com and sirmailorder.com

If it is just a few bucks in the difference, try one of the sponsors. I have found Wolverine supplies to usually have great pricing.

Hey Tak, i have owned a Stevens in .30-06, .308 and .270 They were all great shooters and fit me very well. For the price you can't go wrong. Very capable rigs.

I totally agree, Win. I'm looking to pick up two Stevens and a Nikon and figure I will be just under the thousand mark before taxes, of course. Not to shabby for a couple of economical, yet solid hunting rigs. If I have to put in a couple of SSS triggers, then so be it.

keep your ear to the ground for anyone selling either one of these calibers in the Stevens model. I'll be all over them like a hen on a June-bug.

Cheers!

I own three of them, the last one I bought at WS's Grand Opening. Being one of the first 50 shoppers through the doors, I got 10% off the sticker price which was $319.00 I believe. That would make it $287.10 + 6% GST = $304.32 .... The last one is in .223, it was the most impressive out of the box.
