Ok so i went in yesterday and bought myself a new remington 597....The store was just about to close but they rushed and put a scope on for me before i left. We were kinda pressed for time but the owner of the sore told me to come back later and he would show me how to strip it down to clean it.

Before that i wanted to go out and get her dirty. I took the gun home and was trying to atleast work the semi auto action a bit.

I dont have any bullets in the magazine but i still wasnt able to #### the gun or close the action...A friend of mine said it could be its part of the saftey feature of it leaving the action opened....

I dont have any bullets yet... i was wondering if it would make a difference.

if this is the case what bullets do i go out any buy.... i was thinking the cci minimags.... any good?

It has a last shot hold open bolt, If you remove the mag the bolt should close,
try all kinds of ammo and stick with what works best

so if i remove the mag the bolt should close even there there isnt a bullet in the chamber...

so confused...

how do you close the bolt... do you pull back or push forward....

hmmm maybe i should bring it into the sore before i go to the range...

as for the amo.. i was wondering what others with the exact same gun preferd...

thanks

as far as ammo goes mine has always worked well on federal either the bulk packs or the american eagle. bought some remington thunderbolts and subsonics and had tons of misfires and FTE but thats mine you should experiment with different kinds see whats consistant.

Yeah, the VQ pieces really improve the 597's operation. I gave the guide rods, the bottom of the hammer and the bottom of the bolt a good polishing. Now I am able to feed, fire, extract and eject subsonics all day.

Stupid reply as I don't have my 597 with me at work , but make sure your scope mounts aren't interfering with the bolt handle.
I had this issue with Savage auto a few years ago. Had to grind a bit of clearance room off the rear mount.

If that's the issue buy the Weaver or VQ receiver scope mount. But first read the manual before you go putting live ammo in the weapon.

i have read the manual more than once....sheesh what do you peeps take me for....

anyhow.....havent had a chance to fool around with it but its definitly not the scope interfearing...

When the mag is empty, the bolt will stay open. Remove the mag, pull the cocking handle rearward (toward you) and close the action.
+1

if you read the instructions in the manual is pretty easy to take it apart, but I have putting the recoil springs back in place...
