Coyote hunting, any tips?

I've decided to get back into coyote hunting this year. They have become a real pest in my area. I'm planning on building a hunting stand right on the treeline with the bait set in the field, within range. I am in southern Ontario, and when hunting with firearms, you cant use any large-caliber rifles. I'm thinking of going with a shotgun or a .22 rifle.
How can I improve this setup?
Any advice would be great, thanks.
 
I too hunt in southern Ontario and have great success with an electronic caller and decoy. If possible I would recommend stepping up to a .223, 22-250, .243 etc. Depending on where you are it's not uncommon to have to take shots out past 100 which would be asking a lot from a slug or .22. A hunting stand on the treeline is a great idea.
 
forget about bait and such. Shooting coyotes on a regular basis requires moving about. Electronic caller will be your best friend. Forget about a 22 rimfire. 17 HMR is death to yotes inside of 100 yards. Shotgun with buckshot is an option as well. Southern Ontario is not hunting friendly
 
Shotgun is better than a 22. Or if you only want or can only afford one centrefire and want to hunt up north as well, look at a 270.
Otherwise a 223 is best for price of ammo and range it can shoot.
Baiting takes time to learn when they are coming in, and scheduling to be there when they are. E callers are best and allows you to change schedule and location.
 
Always look behind you. They seem to always come in from behind. ;)
The guys are right though. Having something a bit bigger in cal is an asset.

Ditch the scatter gun and plinker and get a coyote gun.


You want to go with .204 ruger, .223 rem, 22-250 rem, .243 winchester.

I'm in Southern Ontario and my go to coyote gun is actually a 25-06. I've used every common caliber from .22lr up to .270wsm. I've even used a .40 s&w carbine for call ins under 100 yards.

Although calling them in close enough for a kill with a shotgun or rimfire is definitely exciting you will end up with many that hang up just out of range. The missed opportunities due to being under gunned soon take the excitement out of it.

Nothing beats the fast and flat calibers for coyote hunting. Hold on fur anywhere from 0 - 250 yards and you have a dead yote. You don't even have to think about bullet drop or wind at those ranges.

Also just remember, the coyotes don't always come in from where you are expecting them to be. Why limit yourself with a shotgun or .22???

Under the Small Game regs,we may use a rifle of .275 or less in regional municipalities as listed in The Summary. Coyotes show up across fields that require shots of up to 350M. I like to use mouth calls and howlers bringing them in to around 150M or less. Depending on which farms I have permission to hunt,my go-to rifle is .243Win 60gr ballistic tip. There's a few areas I need a .270Win 120gr ballistic tip. Either one of these equals a dead yote downrange.
 
First step put on some nickelback, then drink 5 litres of soy milk n watch a few hours of President Turdau’s amazing speeches to get yourself fired up, but don’t get too fired up, you Want to keep your estrogen high to prevent the evil hormonal trigger for toxic masculinity, as this will make the coyotes / vegans feel unsafe..
Third:
Hire a bunch of woke vegan nonviolent-hunters to befriend the coyotes, as they, with there undeniable logic may be able...”hear me out”... to persuade these vile creatures to give up a life of murder, in favour of tofu wheatgrass quinoa treats, twigs, bark and beyond meat burgers.
 
Bait works, guy out my way used a dead calf last year with good success. Also look into a FoxPro, they work slick and you can set them up 30 or so yards away from your stand. I will echo others and tell you to get a real rifle. My mind would lean towards anything between 243 and 260 that way you can use it deer hunting as well.
