Ahhh, fall. No better time than fall to turn up the heat and start throwing some lead.

Had the Lee 2-Cavity Bullet Mold 457-340-F 45-70 out this afternoon.

Just finished ordering a few more colous from Emerald.

Will post to let you know if the colours work out.

Thinking the same thing. Hope to cast some 340 and 405 for the 45-70 using Lee moulds this week. Then PC. Have someone who wants to learn the process coming over.

Still trying to break in my .45 NOE.

Still not getting good fillin around the pins

There are not many casting issues that aren't solved by adding more heat, especially with new molds. Crank the heat in the pot up to 850-900f. Preheat the mold. When you start getting good bullets dial back the heat and keep going.

A couple of my NOE moulds have been hard to get going initially, I think some deep pore contamination with machining fluids. Clean it initially using boiling water, toothbrush, and dish soap. Rinse in boiling water, dry, preheat. Get the lead pot HOT and start casting. Enough heat will eventually fix anything.

NOE's suggested technique for breaking in a new mould is to bake it in the oven for a few cycles. This is supposed to help seat the locator pins assemblies but has the added benefit of burning off most contaminants.

Fall is for walking down Pheasant and Huns. I wait until the snow in the back yard is up to my arse to cast boolits LOL.

Nice 45's BTB.

Yomomma you mentioned in a post that you wipe your boolits down with acetone before PC. Do you do this to all boolits or just the big ones like 45-70? Do you wipe or rinse? I take it it’s to remove any oil etc for better coverage.

All your casts seem to be extremely well covered. Just looking to improve things and always willing to try something new! Thanks.

It's getting to be about that time.

Which is easier, tumble lubing or powder coating?

Regards,
Josh

You are correct. I put bullets in a mason jar. Pour acetone over them. Drain with funnel and screen back into acetone. Let dry and right into the powder.

Josh...

In the end powder coating is the better way to go.
