Sig Sauer Legion Coating - is this normal wear?

NOTE: I know that holstering a gun will cause wear over time. I like the idea of my firearm getting a bit of personality over time, but am more wondering about this specific finish and whether or not it's normal to have this much wear after holstering it ONCE. I ask because I've seen other Legion finishes in people who carry their firearm daily in a kydex holster with less/no wear at this point. 6 months after holstering though, I'd be worried if there WASN'T wear.

Hey everyone,

My first handgun purchase was a Sig Sauer P226 Legion (DA/SA) because I got a pretty sweet deal on it brand new. I had heard of some issues with their coating in 2016 and 2017, but after a ton of research it seems like a lot of the issues were figured out and most people hadn't had excessive wear or issues.

I got the gun a week ago, brand new from Al Flaherty's. A couple of days ago I put it in my Stealthgear USA kydex holster for the first time and noticed it was super snug. When I took it out, I inspected the gun and noticed some marks on the side that touches the kydex. (It's hybrid, kydex hits one side and fabric the other). The holsters screws were as loose as possible as well.

After more research, I cleaned & oiled the gun real well and that did get rid of some of what I thought was scuffing, but not all of it. I have since put it in the holster one more time, and have a new similar scuff right near the barrel exit. This gun has never left my house, never been fired, etc, so it's unfortunate.

I'm attaching some pictures, but here are my questions:

1. Is this normal wear for holstering? With a gun with a coating, should I expect that after 1 time in the holster it will scrape off coating? Others have mentioned that they had similar scuffing, and after a weekend of using it after the initial scuffing the finish came off to the point where it was bare metal.

2. Is this an acceptable thing to contact Sig's warranty people for? Or am I being too nitpicky?

3. Stealthgear. Is this an issue on their part? Or both the holster and the gun's finish? I just don't know what caused this, if it's the gun, or the holster, and I don't know what I should expect in terms of assistance.

Straight up let me know if I'm being too nitpicky. But after spending $1600+ on a gun, I wasn't expecting this kind of wear after one go. I've seen tons of pictures on american forums of people who carry with them daily for months and have no scuffs like this on the finish at all.

Thanks everyone!

When you decide to holster your gun it will have wear marks sooner or later. I don`t compete in IPSC/IDPA/etc. and I don`t want to have holster wear on my guns so I don`t have any.

Finish wise: "they don`t make 'em like they used to..."

If you holster a gun it will wear the finish. The only coating that resists it a bit better is hard chrome. Any dark and especially the powdery type finish on the Legions will wear with holstering. Even my HK P2000 and it's 'hostile environment' finish wears with holster work.

I totally get the idea that holstering a gun will cause wear, that much is common sense. Should holstering a gun once for 10 seconds cause this amount of wear is my question.
I ask because I've seen photos of the same gun holstered in similar kydex holsters daily for 6 months with no wear yet, or minimal wear compared to the finish damage mine has after holstering it once.

I'm not worried about long term holster wear, I kind of like the idea, gives my gun some personality. But with the rate this wear is going, one weekend event involving a holster and my finish will be stripped to the metal. Is that normal?

Unfortunately, Sig's Legend coating is not known to be the most durable - not uncommon to see similar on lightly used Legends.

I have the same Legion and use a bladetech holster for it. Prolly been out with it about 25 times for ipsc practise and nothing even close to those marks on it. Not sure if the bladetech makes the same kind of wear patters, but there really no wear anywhere on it, and I'm not exactly dainty when I re-holster. If you're concerned, give MD Charlton a call, they handle all things Sig in Canada iirc.

Thank you! This is what I was looking for. I've watched videos of people holstering it vigorously and not having the same wear as mine after holstering it literally once.
I emailed them, but will likely call Tuesday if I don't hear back. If it's a month of back and forth and me without a gun, screw it.. I'll go get it cerakoted, but I know if I take this to the range for a weekend, it'll be skinned down to bare metal by Monday and there's no way in hell that's normal.

If anyone else has experience let me know.

I've used 2 kinds of oil to try and get it out as some have suggested elsewhere, definitely worked getting some scuffs off, but the pictures above is 5 minutes after oiling again (as you can see under the slide, lol) and it's still damaged. If anyone has any magical suggestions for what kind of magic oil I can use.. let me know. But at this point I don't feel like it's something oil will get out unfortunately.

Yes totally normal for the Legion. Its a bit too bad. I'm contemplating a Legion in 10mm but wish they left them with the standard stainless finish.

Put it in the holster 3 more times yesterday and all I can say is. Yikes.
Watched videos of 500 round reports and 1000 round reports of dudes who clearly holster it roughly and theirs looks immaculate compared to mine after 0 rounds shot and hitting the holster 4 times. This is after me breaking in the holster with a wrapped older 226 in plastic wrap for 48 hours. Holy hell, definitely something up with my coating. Not cured right maybe? Didn't layer it with something properly first or a coat after? I don't know..

Either way, I've went from being 50/50 unsure if I was going to suck it up, to 100% wanting to see if I can get it looked at. Sig forums USA seems to think I have a serious problem with mine if it's this bad this early on. I guess there's been some defective coatings where it's even worse than the usual "bad Legion finish". I was totally repaired for a sensitive finish, but not like this!

Thanks for the input everyone. Going to see if I can get it swapped out, and then just run a leather holster or something so I don't take my chances..

Wow...I've got one pending CFO transfer.

wondering if you can just send the slide for replacement instead of the whole piece to not have to wait on the transfer and registration.
