My uncle just informed me that he has one of my grandfathers guns that he wanted to pass on to me some time. It is an old lever 25-35.
Personally I dont sh*t about this round, can any one help me out here

Necked down .30-30 case. Velocity about 2200 fps with a 117 grain bullet. Winchester still loads it. Per capita, it sold better in Canada than the U.S. Marlin had the almost identical .25-36. Great for deer and smaller to about 100 yards. Great gun!

It's never been noted for it's great stopping power on deer. My dad had one and told me it wounded too many deer so he got rid of it. And trust me on this, he was a far better shot and hunter then most people could ever hope to be. Up to you but I'd be somewhat relucant to use one for deer. In that caliber I'd rather use a 250-3000, 257 Roberts, 25-06.

Yeah, but listen to this:

My mom was in hospital down here in Vancouver and there was this old Native guy in the hospital too, never took his cowboy hat off.

I started talking to him. He was from up in the Chilcotin somewhere. His name was Dave.

"You do much hunting Dave?" I asked.

He nodded. A man of few words, Dave was.

"Get any moose?"

"Yup. Shot lots of moose."

"How about bears? Shoot any bears??

Another nod. "Lots of bears."

"Any grizzly bears?"

"Grizzly bears, black bears, any kind bear."

"So what did you use Dave? A 30-30?"

He shook his head. "25-35. Shoot 'im right here," he said, lifting his elbow and pointing to his side just under the armpit.

I'm not sure how good that'd work on a charging Grizzly bear. Or even a lung shot like you mentioned unless you can outrun the bear for the first 100 yards before he runs out of wind!

Well, he probably had seen more grizzly bears in his life than we could dream of, and he was still around.

He might have been full of bs too, but he didn't even bring up charging grizzly bear stories. I don't think he'd even heard of the Internet, where most grizzly bear charges occur.

Actually the 25-35 is a better cartridge than you guys are giving it credit for. The 30WCF (30-30) -- propells a 30 cal. bullet with 30 gr. of smokeless powder ---- the 25-35 propells a 25 cal. bullet with 35 gr. of smokeless powder. Doesn't that remind you all a bit of the 257 Robs. -- which is a necked down 7mm. The 30-30 is still considered okay for deer up to a100 yds.; so it would seem reasonable to assume a necked down 30-30 to 25 cal and 5 more grains of powder would be okay for deer to 100 yds as well.

Don't confuse the 25-35 with the 25-20 (necked down 32-20) which is a tad underpowered for deer past 25 yds.

The 38-55, 32-40, 25-35 and the 30-30 all used the same parent case.

Here's an interesting link on Winchester bringing back the 25-35.

Rod you forgot the 32 Special but you are right it is a good cartridge on deer.
Seen lots of fall one shot wouldn't be a bit scared to shoot a deer at 200 yds with it again.
Ken.

If I recall, the "old" and very long-standing world record Typical Whitey
(prior to the Hansen buck) was taken back in about 1919 with a 25-35 ... Wisconsin or Minnesota ????
