I don’t see what the gun has to do with hunting regs, if it’s NR, it should be good to go, right?Building my modern sporter in 5.56 but wondering. If I drop in a Cmmg .22 kit would I be good under the hunting regs to hunt small game as a .22. Thoughts .

And it meets caliber guidelines.
Should be no different than using a 10-22 or a mossberg 715.
It’s not a 5.56 though.I’m just concerned with a gun that is 5.56 will wildlife officer if I’m stopped give me crap. I can call them and ask but I’m thinking they’ll default to no.
The bullet should not bounce around in any barrel, unless you’re using the wrong ammunition... in which case, the bouncing bullet is the least of your concerns. My only concern would be accuracy. As a .223 or 5.56 barrel are both larger than .22 the bullet tends to bounce around a bit in there. I’m building a dedicated MS upper using a .22lr out of an existing AR-22 that I own with a .22LR barrel. The JP kit is nice but pricy. I didn’t pay that much for my whole AR-22.

Shoot 223/5.56 out of the correct barrel.
Shoot 22lr out of the correct barrel.
No issues.
I was talking about the .22LR kits that have the chamber adaptor. The inside diameter of a .223 barrel is extremely close to .22 so it works otherwise they wouldn’t sell the kits. I wasn’t talking about shooting .22LR out of a 12ga shotgun. The slight difference in barrel diameter allows the smaller bullet to not spin on its own axis but an axis just slightly off centre causing the bullet to not spin tightly but more of a circle once it exits the barrel.
I've been thinking about something similar to this the last few days. If you used an upper with a dedicated. 22lr barrel and bolt (not a conversion kit in a .223/5.56 barrel) on your Modern Sporter, then as long as it met the 26" minimum, it would still be non restricted, no? One could make a very fun MK18(ish) setup and plink in the woods with full capacity rimfire magazines.
Would you spend the extra $ to get the forward assist on a dedicated 22lr for the MS?

No as it will not engare the bolt anyway so why waste the money.
