Antique Bear defence thread Whats your choice!

Holy Sh!+ is that ever a nice rifle.
I guess the precut rifling on the bullets would obtrude to fit the grooves perfectly when the rifle is fired even if the sizing were off a bit.
Of course that would depend on the alloy.
I wonder what the rate of twist is.
It makes my 45-110 look like a 22 and probably kicks like a Clydesdale.

i shoulderd a 1" bore cap lock at the kamloop's gun show.... load er up with rusty nail's and bit's of chain and your set if a ninja ever decide's to take a run at you.... course the powder and shot costs combined with the recoil might make it a wall hanger rather then a shooter.

i found a site a while back that custom build's big bore cap lock's.... wish i could find it again.

I talked to a park warden that said he emptyed a full can of pepper spray on a Griz near kamloops.
The bear just wiped his face in the long grass for a second and then continued his Attack even more pissed off :D
i forget what he eventully shot it with but i know he was glad he had a gun!
i think it was a 12 ga with slugs.

But hey pepper spray isnt pre 1898 so no good here! :p
 
In the good old days the 50/90 Sharps was king of the hill(still is), all who were there agreed....it was the best buffalo gun....and the .45 Colts' was the best handgun(still is)....those are my picks antique or otherwise.

I think you're right about th 50-90.
I have a tricked out 45-110 being built at Shiloh right now and if I ever order another it will be a 50-90.
 
The antique pistol on my hip is what I wear when remote wilderness canoeing/camping with my wife and kids. It's a New Model #3 made in 1880. Incidentally, there was bear stool only a few yards from our camp and a huge Cougar was only 100 yards from where we were cooking our supper.

Yeah, I know that 256 grains at 800 fps is not the most powerful antique in town, but we're talking bear or cougar attack here, where I can shove the muzzle right up it's nose. I also brought a .45-70 Winchester 1886 (made in 1901), but when a Cougar or bear is on top of you or one of your kids, it's not what you got back in the tent that counts, it's what you have on you that does.
Incidentally, I'd like to stick McGinty out in the remote wilderness alone with his wife and kids (if he has any) and see if he changed his tune with bears and cougars wandering around within a hundred yards of his camp .... out there ..... all alone.

nice pics when i pack a 32 RF most of the time i am out but i am thinking of getting a webley 455 just cuz i think it will have more umph...
