Is it worth buying spare parts in advance?

In general, seeing as milsurp spare parts supply can be a bit iffy/unreliable, is it generally recommendable to buy spare parts "while I still can"? Particularly for parts which are known to be a bit more fragile, e.g. the bolt stop on a Ross Mk III?

Cheers

It depends what rifle you are talking about. Some have parts that are more prone to wear/breakage, but parts for some of the more common MILSURPs are still in good supply, even 60-70 years after production ended. It's also worth remembering that these weapons were engineered and tested to death for reliability and then used in much more demanding conditions than they will ever see in the hands of a civilian collector/shooter.

In my opinion, one way to guarantee one will never need to replace a part is to buy the replacement in advance. I guess that is not necessarily a bad thing.

With regard to the bolt stop on the Mk III Ross. It has been my experience that the bolt head is more likely than the bolt stop to suffer damage from collisions. That may be why a good bolt head is more difficult to find.

The issue is, right now, the only store online that sells a variety of Ross MkIII parts is numrich in the US, so I'd have it ship over. I just feel that paying 35$ for a screw is a bit silly, maybe I should look at a local gun show...

What specifically should I look for (as I don't know what I should prepare for), firing pin? bolt heads? Or would it be preferable to hope everything keeps working and buy specific parts when they need replacing?

The book The Long Emergency by Kuntsler talks about the speed of commerce. We may have access to so many goods for sale, but are there really more goods or simply more market opportunities? The Ross bolt stops mentioned already might in fact be the only ones on the internet, and once they're gone, POOF! no more anywhere. Yes, there will be ones and twos in the parts bins of the old noninternet economy, but are they really for sale, or simply missing market opportunities.

Be prepared to catalog/inventory the spare parts you do end up buying.
Nothing worse then buying the parts and then to forget what it is, or where what you need is stored.

I'm living out of boxes right now and it is frustrating to find what I need in a timely manner.

Yes a very good idea. Purchase some spare parts for your collections now. Or one day when you need a broken 100 year old rifle repaired for the range, it might stay broken for a very long time.

Good advice!
Your estate will also appreciate the extra work... next thing you know, you'll also realize that you have backup parts for backup guns for backup projects...

yes and make sure to seal them and id them in bags or file system of some kind , you will not know what they are later
i have tons of bits for everything from my TT33 to my Glock ,remember the prepper motto 2 is 1 and 1 is none cheers

When you see reasonable priced or clearance priced parts for a
gun you own or would like to own .....Buy Them....The majority of
gun owner's don't . There is always someone who will need them!
