Moose from NB hunt 2018

You folks had an incredibly successful hunt despite the full moon before the opener and rain, wind and warm temps. Congratulations, I am very envious and dreaming of some day having my own NB Moose hunt. That I can hopefully share with my father and brothers.

Doing this hunt with 2 of my sons made it special for me. The one who was my designate hunter is a friend that I've hunted with for over 25 years. Those are the things that make it extra special and fun. The one who I mentioned as being our "guide" (and one of the designate hunters) deserves a lot of credit for my sons success.

My actual hunting time was probably about 7 hours. I spent most of the time hauling my son's moose to the registration station and butcher. It was a great time spent together. All three moose were down by the end of the third day, so yes, we were pretty fortunate.

Magnificent bulls ! Gotta love 300 win ! Marvelous experience for the young lads. Thanks for sharing.

what's a " designate hunter " ?

When you get a tag, your allowed to designate a second hunter who can carry a gun and shoot your moose. Still limited to one animal, and the designate must remain within sight and sound of the licencee while hunting.

I was designate this year and shot a bull moose on someone else's tag.

Only moose season has this. Normally it's an offense to tag an animal harvested by someone else.

You can't do that in NL. That's why we have a party system.

Bulls were shot at less than 30 yards (estimated), heaviest one shot at with both 7mm Rem Mag and 30-06 Weatherby Lazerguard, and lighter bull was one-shot kill with 300 Win Mag; both 7mm and 300wm firearms (usage) compliments of Fierce Firearms. The Weatherby was my rifle, but carried by my son. Cow was shot at 125 yds. with Ruger #1 in 300 win mag.

Congrats on your successful hunt.

Designate hunter can't hunt alone.

And you don't have to designate anyone, but it's popular to do, most guys like the increase chances of an extra gun.

Ontario hunts on the party system for deer, bear and moose. Any member can harvest the full number of tags held by the party... subject to proximity and immediate communication.

Congratulations! It doesn't get any better than that. Three moose in the freezer will certainly make for some fantastic meals over the winter.

Good for you. We were shooting together at HRPC before the hunt---zone 21 was not so good---look forward to seeing you at HRPC and hearing more details.RP

Wow. I have hunted moose a number of times in NB and never got a moose that big. I think the biggest bull was about 600 pounds.

Had no idea they got to be so big.

That would be a decent size moose in BC.

The last moose I got in NB was shot at 5 yards as it trotted towards me at first light.
