I’ve been out hunting daily for a month straight in my region with no luck other than grouse, a friend has been up since the 7th and we’ve been looking for deer and trying to find some elk. Lots of old elk tracks and droppings but I fear all the fresh wolf signs have pushed them out, as well as deer in the first area we spent a couple days in.

With WT does opening today we’re changed areas and headed down lower, we were heading up a road to get to a spot I know has a fair bit of activity after unloading his side by side and I caught a flash of a tail up the hill from us 40y up from the road we were on. Nice size doe by herself up the hill slightly quartering towards me, put her in the crosshairs and took the shot. She jumped and ran to the right, I headed up the hill towards the last spot I saw her running through the brush. She made it 20-30y from where I shot her and I found her bleeding out, I hit her low on the right chest hitting the heart and the bullet exited high mid rib in front of the diaphragm. Heart damage was massive, shot damage was contained to the rib area.

Was a bit of a tricky angle but I got a clean shot off, I slid her down the hill after I cut my tag and had her on the road and gutted pronto. We got her in the back of the side by side and continued looking for another for my buddy, once home I got her skinned and quartered. Damn happy to finally get a deer on the ground, the pressure is off and I can concentrate on getting my buck tags cut.

Right on!

Why the gloves? If it's too dirty to touch, why would you want to eat it?

Old habits die hard, you wear gloves at work for almost 20 years in order to not get blood on your hands and you wear gloves whenever your handling meat and blood. I always glove up to gut any animal, except grouse now and again. Has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the meat.

Thanks everyone, pleased to have one in the freezer finally.
