Arguing with a BC CO in the butcher shop..... hmmmmmm

my freezer is full every year with enough to share around so nope, don't feel bad about shooting a nice fat 3 point. don't feel bad about the 2 point blacktail i gunned the week after either LOL
showed MD one of my spots, even drew him a treasure map to follow..... but he only shot a 3 x 3 blacktail so my pointers must have been innadequate to yours LOL

I do hold out for big bucks sometimes and have posted enough book deer on this site alone for those who have paid attention.
but I know yer just another one of those guys on this site that like to troll me whenever possible so jokes on you i guess.

Uh no, shooting small deer ensures deer never get big and populations don't really thrive. If you're shooting enough to share it sounds like you're over hunting, taking more than you yourself need. You may as well shoot does with your logic, just ruin the population because "if it fills the freezer who cares?"

Shoot big old bucks, just like any other big game animal. I only hunt for 150+ class deer, and if there are 4 130" bucks hanging around then that gives me more choice as they grow.

Troll much?

I'm a meat hunter and our family takes at least 4 spikers or forkys every season. We are all licensed. If we win anterless LEH, we shoot those too. Are you going to cry now?

Okay seems like shooting baby bucks is a common thing in BC. Whatever, you guys hunt what you like lol I would feel no joy or pride shooting a little buck regardless of how many it fed. Everyone hunts different I guess.

My family doesn't eat antlers, does yours?

There's a month-long open season on any buck. ####loads of them get shot and eaten, yet there's plenty every year where I hunt.

Like I said, there's something to be said about working hard for a nice big mature animal.

And if that's all you said, most of us would just agree and move on. But you didn't just say that. You chastised those of us who choose to shoot the first legal buck because that's how we feed ourselves.

Next time, take the high road before spouting off that drivel and then you won't end up looking like and a$$hole.

It's an easy rule; if it's legal, then STFU.

Anyway whatever, different hunting for different folks.

I'm a trophy hunter and don't condemn other hunters who wish to feed their family. I encourage and congratulate all hunters to harvest what they want, and like you mentioned, "everyone hunts differently."

I bet you two would have not been pleased with his actions either, had it been you. I would also bet you two would have done a better job then this guy as well. He probably should have known the regulations before he started in on him.

Wise post.

I get what your saying and going to give you an honest answer.
One, I don't live in alberta where one can glass for hundreds of yards in places and stalk up on prime bucks using thier skills as a hunter. If you can consistantly harvest 150+ class animals , that's great and I'd probably appreciate your hunting photos if they were shared. Those big ole alberta mulies and white tails aren't what I'm hunting.
Here at home in region 5 BC we have big mulies, sure, and I've been scouting a group with some nice 4x4 and bigger animals but have not been afforded a good shot in reasonable daylight. I harvested my mulie tag in region 5 because the 3 pt was a nice fat buck and I didn't know if I'd get much deer hunting in for freezer meat so..... I did what most hunters do and squeezed off a shot ;)
I am saving that group of mature bucks for my wife to fill her tag as I really want her to get a "trophy" of her own.
The Black tail deer are a whole nuther thing. The deer we are hunting are high country alpine deer , north of the mountain ranges that make up whistler bc, migrating down through kilometers of very steep pine and douglas fir forest and thick patches of deciduous trees and are "in abundance" , thus the doe LEH draws, the 2 buck back limit and the youth and senior private land hunts. These deer average 40 to 90 pounds of cut and wrapped meat that is my favorite game animal on the table. It takes a bit of knowing about how these deer operate in order to be successful every year. For black tail I always hold out on my second tag for a full mature large racked animal..... and many years that tag goes unfilled due to passing on lesser bucks. Last years 4x5 will be in the book with some very solid numbers but it's still with the taxidermist although I did post pics of that deer last year.
I don't trophy hunt, I hunt areas that game is not in short supply and 3 deer and 1/2 a moose or elk do my family just fine for sausage and table fare and sure, we share some with the mother inlaw.... keeps me in the good books LOL

but my question to you is.... why would you disagree ? If you have been doing the job 23 years.... would you let a junior officer pull that crap on a hunter picking up his meat? Would you ride with a rookie who didn't know his ass froma hole in the ground with an attitude to go with it?

I'm not butthurt I'm genuinely interested in hearing why you take issue with my thread and my decision to post what I did.

I was in a hurry, was in full compliance and was stopped by a guy full of piss n vinegar so i responded in kind. Simple as that except I was right and he was way off base and totally wrong.
I refuse to be subjected to situations like that.

I posted this thread because everywhere i go, interacting with fellow hunters and sporting goods shops, everyone keeps telling me it is now only 1 mule deer in BC for all regions..... which simply is not true. Which "is" fact..... not my imagination or interpretation.
So when a CO, of all people, interupts my day and my hour drive to get frozen meat home in 20C weather..... and he is blathering on about nonsense .... AND he has the documentation in his hands from the butcher verifying my tags..... and he of all people should be well aware of the regulations he is enforcing.....

hopefully other BC hunters confused about the Mulie regs will read this thread and take something positive from it. If you insist on interjecting with your nonsense... thankfully CGN has an ignore function ;)

I'm not saying that you were wrong by standing up for yourself. All I am saying is that if the young fella made a mistake then maybe you should have taken the time to calmly explain to him where he was out of line and where he was mistaken instead of, in your words "got down right rude".

Some new guys have a lot of attitude, I get that, but a lot of people are d!cks too, so instead of teaching him to be a bigger d!ck in the future why not try and mold him into a guy that learns from his mistakes. Anyways, just my opinion.

And I wasn't trying to intergect nonsense in your thread..... Just a different outlook I guess.

fair enough, you have a fair point, was not looking to spar with anyone when i posted this thread and was more hoping it would lead to a discussion provoking more understanding of the mule deer regs here that as other BC members have suggested, are being misunderstood by hunters, game cutters, sporting good stores selling tags and now apparently CO's as well.
peace.

Like baiting for bears in Alberta....... how can you call that hunting?

Nothing to see here - move on.

I had a patient at work a couple months ago, first time a patient has ever made me so angry, reminds me a bit of this situation. He had neck x-rays taken after an MVC, by my coworker. His parents were related to a big shot radiologist, and asked for a CD of the images for him to interpret. Our er dr even spoke with our radiologist reading the images, and our rad asked for better images of 2 of the views done by my coworker. This already had me feeling indifferent about taking him, A 19 year old pretty boy for more pictures he didn't really need. Before taking him, I spoke with the er dr who was basically doing everything possible to satisfy this kids parents, and going overboard imo. Even though the kid was wearing a collar, I asked our er dr if I could stand him up, easier to get good pics of the lower neck. He told me to basically do what ever I needed. I already knew how I wanted to get better pics, so I wheel him down in the stretcher, ask him if he can stand up, and he groans loudly as he sits up in the stretcher. I told him I planned on having him hold onto a pair of jugs weighing about 7 or 8 lbs to help visualize the joints of C7/T1, which the previous tech didn't get all that well. He turns to me and says, so you want to hurt me?
I had almost an out of body experience at that moment, not sure if he really said that. I asked him to repeat that, which he did. As it sunk in, I could feel my blood boiling, I could only think that this was the first time in 20 years, that a patient believed that I wanted to cause them harm.
I didn't take it too well. I told him to lay back down, and that we were done. I think I passed Ben Johnson pushing the stretcher on the way back to emerge.
After telling the RN and dr what happened, I had at least 6 patients waiting, so started on the next one. After doing 2 or 3 I happened to see the kids parents outside his room, they were absent when I got him back to his room initially, so I walked up to the dad and asked him if his son had his attitude adjusted yet. Kid didn't tell them what happened, so I did. Said to them I am busy, have many people waiting, but if he agrees to keep his yapper shut, I'll take him next. I asked them to follow as well, made sure they were both in the room, no more issues.
Thinking back on it, I don't think I could have reacted differently. It was like a switch flipped in my brain, and I was almost watching myself react, didn't feel like I was in command of the ship. Perhaps we all have our triggers, and when someone hits the right note, we're cruising on autopilot.

You mean, told him.
I'm sure the real meat and potatoes have been left out for brevity.
Rob

LOL yer late to the party man but I absolutely expected you to show up and post exactly what you have ;)
I dunno about brevity but ya,.... full disclosure.... I left out the part about the rainbow unicorns , I didn't want you getting all excited now.
thanx for your contribution

The CO I dealt with last year was excellent.

Had a poacher set up a blind, salt blocks, and flagging tape on on our family property without permission. I found a deer gut pile complete with used surgical gloves and paper towel. I don't hunt, but live on a rural acreage. I'm pro hunter and pro gun, but it felt like I'd been violated. These things are what can close off hunting on private property and give hunters a bad name, albeit unfairly. I called and spoke with dispatch, who connected me with CO Ray. He informed me that sadly, the punishment is a $150 fine or something puny.

I ended up setting up game cams and couldn't believe how man people trespassed through our property. One thing that earned props was Ray, I caught him multiple days at all different sorts of hours checking our property. He didn't know I'd set them up. A lot of people didn't

Anyways, i know I'm slightly off topic, but from a taxpayers perspective, my experience was very positive.

you have always to start somewhere and a fine even minimalist is a fine ...
