Hi all, first time post to this forum.

I've got a Boyds walnut stock which will eventually find a home under my M305. In test fitting metal parts from the old Norinco stock it's clear the buttplate will never fit this stock properly. This got me thinking that if possible I'd like get all new hardware in a matching finish if I can (minus the stock liner which fits fine and is tucked up in the stock anyhow).
I haven't had much luck finding the parts I need on this side of the border, but I see that kits are available aplenty on the other side. My question is whether anyone knows if these parts (buttplate, sling points, ferrule) are ITAR controlled? If not it would be easy enough for me to ship these items to Northern MN and pick them up myself.

I've tried to find my own answer, but after reviewing the regulation and speaking with a US customs supervisor at the border, it's all about as clear as mud.:confused:

M14 parts, ITAR.
M1A parts, non-ITAR.

Just gotta watch where you order from. Brownells will be able to ship most of the parts you want should they be in stock. Same goes for Treeline.
 
The gi plate is not substantively different than the Chinese one, the only difference being the thickness of the hinge boss on the backside. A30 second fix with a Dremel tool.

If you Chinese plate won't fit, it's the stock, not the plate. Boyd's stocks are not "drop in". There is some fitting required, including in this area.

I'm not set up for photos at this time but I found this picture on the interweb from a fellow who appears to have had the same problem:

I could certainly remove enough material to allow the buttplate to slide on, but even then there would be a ridge around the perimeter of the buttplate which would leave the wood prone to chipping (ie, the butt of the stock itself would have to be sanded down substantially to bring it flush with the outside perimeter of the buttplate).
Ever seen/heard of something like this before?
I was under the impression that the Boyds stocks were cut to fit USGI parts. I always expect some fitting work on a new stock, but like I said, the amount of material I would have to remove for a flush finish seems unusually exessive...

If you don't care about the metal butttpad and want something functional and reasonably priced, brownells sells M1A rubber buttpads that fit nicely on the fatter wood stocks. Might be worth looking at.
 
The Boyd's stocks don't have the same external dimensions of a usgi stock, they are made fatter in many dimensions and it's left to the user to slim them to preference.

If it were mine, I would inlet the buttplate and they plane the butt contour to fit/taste.

Some guys leave these stocks as heavy as possible for target gun configurations.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not sure I want to give up on the original look just yet.

Good to know. I ordered myself some new parts from Treeline including a USGI plate. I'll see if it fits any differently, and if not was thinking I'd proceed just as you've suggested. I have this nice little spoke shave that worked really well in slimming down the forearm of my Marlin 336SC to more of a cowboy style profile (it originally had that fat-style forearm from the 50s, which I dislike).
