I was wondering what the rules are when it comes to importing an air rifle (PAL required fps) from the US. My inlaws are going down to Florida for a few months and he wanted to bring back an air rifle. He is licensed here we just weren't sure about the exportation from the US or do they look at it differently since it is an air rifle?

In order to bring a restricted or non-restricted firearm into Canada as a new import, an individual must be at least 18 years old and have a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) with the licence privileges for the class of firearm that is being imported.
All firearms must be declared at Canada Customs and the applicable duties and taxes must be paid. More information on the declaration process is available from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Border Information Services website and also by calling 1-800-461-9999 (toll-free from within Canada), or for calls outside of Canada, at 1-204-983-3500 or 1-506-636-5064.

But you need to ensure that air rifle. Has no moderator, shrouds, or any muffling devices. And most bullpups are prohib.

Only rifles that can be converted into bullpups are prohibited in bullpup form, i believe the problem with importing them is that the barrel is integrally suppressed or they fall under the legal overall length.

Due to ITAR, I agree with others about scopes, but...

I have purchased 5 air rifles (over 500 fps) at the Ambassador Bridge border store in Detroit on my way to Windsor ON. All came with scopes. Declared them at Canada Customs, gave them my PAL and had no issues.

I would not have thought that the border store, which only caters to people crossing the international border, would not sell things that are illegal to export, but they have also sold scope rings which I was told were also ITAR restricted.

So you got lucky there. Canada does not care about scopes but us customs could get you in deep trouble if they found out.
Indeed weird that they are selling them with scope..

I asked us customs about this once. That one man’s opinion was that a scope that comes in a sealed box with the air rifle as part of kit, would be considered the same as a nerf gun that came with a scope. It’s an accessory to a toy, sold in the same package.

But if you were to try to buy a scope separately, and bring it back, that would be a different story.

Again, just one man’s opinion.
