I know this has probably been played out but have a friend that really wants a $1-2k~ 1911 (specifically)

I never have been truly interested in 1911 other than in passing and am in the dark on them.

Suggestions on newer stuff? Just a shooter, non collector.

Colt? Kimber? Or?

Thanks.

A 1911 will likely be my next handgun purchase once I've filled the coffers again and I'm looking in the same price range. Ones that interest me are Springfield Armory, SIG (I've owned two of those before and really liked them), maybe a Kimber TLE or a Colt, and you might even find a used Les Baer or Dan Wesson at the high end of the range. STI pistols are pretty good, but the Trojan has gone from around $1400 to over $2000 and I don't think they're worth it at that price.

That is like asking what truck you should buy, you will get every answer under the sun, starter gun, norinco , than you have SAMS a bit more money, 1-2K is getting in to the good stuff, O don't have one, Dan Wesson sounds good, had a Kimber ,I liked it, but some bad mouth them, The Remington is a good gun good price point Springfield's are fine.
There are many good used ones out their right now, look on the EE
If this a first gun, I would go mid range, if he is a good shooter already, than go for the frills and spend the money. Shoot a few is the best advice I could give him.
Picking out a gun for someone else is like picking out a wife for your friend, don't always end well.

Cant go wrong with a Ruger SR1911(and have a little money over),but I would consider spending a bit more and go for a Dan Wesson. They are great value for the money and beautifully made.Another option would be a Colt, they seem to have upped their game in the past few years and are putting out decent guns. There seems to be quite a bit on the EE at the moment, may be worth keeping a watch there.

There are still some of those LASD Dan Wesson Specialists out there (45ACP or 9mm), seen one vendor with them at just over 1700 recently - you will find it very hard to beat that kind of price for the quality you get.

I personnally have a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup National match. I bought it used on the EE, in mint condition, for about half the price of a new one. The difference of quality between the Colt and cheaper 1911s is striking. Hence, my suggestion is to buy a used higher end gun on the EE, as opposed to a lower quality new gun.

I cannot speak about the other high end products, i.e. STI, Kimber, Dan Wesson, but Colts are amazing.

Remember the "ABC's" of buying a 1911. Always Buy Colt. Good place to start and end. In that price range there is also some other guns that will prove to be excellent. Springfield and Dan Wesson being the two most likely candidates. Larry Vickers says that Kimber has more issues than Time Magazine. I tend to agree.

What Bill said, these are great guns, would take it in 9mm.
