Famous Single Shot Hunting Rifles

I have 2 Winchester 1885 (405) and (375). Ruger No1 in 275 Rigby and a Rolling block in 357Mag. If walking and hunting all day it’s the No1, love this gun and have taken an Elk this year with it. I enjoy the 1885s but a bit heavy , l like the classic look and I guess they fall under that category for you, the 375 would be the DG class I suppose. The 357 is a fun gun to shoot and the rolling block is a classic also.I had a TC pro hunter but I’m a wood guy and just couldn’t do the plastic. It was an ok shooter.

Cased 500 BPE and 6.5 X 53 rimmed work

Nice....id love one in 25/20 myself

Ralph Martini could build you a nice one on a Hagn action. For famous you could try and find a Gibbs falling block.

NO mention of the Dakota, Alex Henry, or Westley Richards? ......Come on, there's a whole series of books on Brit single shots, .....lots to choose from!!

Or, there's the Sharps and its variations of Buffalo rifles.

I don't know why certain singles can grab me while others turn me away. The Browning always turns my head but I have never bought one. I like the underlever on the Ruger but I don't like the rest of the rifle. The modular concept of the Thompson Centre always interests me but they don't keep my attention. Handi Rifles are economical but I won't go there. Never had my hands on a Henry or the CVA. Perdersoli is too antiquated for me.

So this leaves the Merkel and the Luxus as my only real contenders. Beautiful rifles. I really like the lightweight Luxus.

Truly for me the modern Singles are attractive and usable in the order:

Martini and Hagn
Dakota Model 10
Blaser Model 95
Merkel Jager
Browning 1885/B78
Ruger No. 1
Thompson Center Encore
Thompson Center Contender

I've shot all of these but the Merkel. I would hunt with all of them but some certainly hold the fit, function, and handling (not to mention price tag) over others.

If I was to pick on over the other for a balance of price tag and everything else in would buy a Merkel.

I suggest the following, in order, sort of my preference & value for money thing:
Merkel K3
Blaser K95
Krieghoff Hubertus
Hagn
Luxus arms
Dakota M10
Browning 78
Ruger #1
