Canadian Rangers C19

I love the practicality of this design, and if it wasn't $2500, I'd be saving up for one.

No idea why more rifles are not set up this way. The Ruger Guide has forward-mounted irons, the Ruger Scout has a receiver sight but the silly scout mount. The CZ557 Range has forward irons. Nice guns, but none of them are set up to have good optics and good peep.

If someone made a rifle like this with fold-down peep sight and quick-detach scope mounts, I think it would be the ultimate setup for all-round Canadian hunting. Just my opinion of course. If my CIL 830 was drilled for the peep sight, I'd be able to get it close to this setup, as the sidemount scope allows for use of both irons and scope. But mine isn't drilled for the peep, although most Savage 340-based rifles are. And of course, it's in .30-30, which most people crap on.

It really should... this gun should feed 100%, pure and simple or recall and start again. Why they didn’t buy Rugers and specificy a metal trigger guard, and a pelican case for $1500 all up probably less in a bulk buy, boggles my mind. Then again the government... and these people choose helicopters and jets too.

Sounds cynical I’m happy for the OP, and that they’re buying new rifles / committing to the rangers. But let’s get rifles that work.
I’ve been waiting so long for this gun and the government kept changing its mind on how they would deploy and when. So glad to finally have it. I think if they do a recall then just the mags need changing. I think it’s a simple fix but you know how that works.

As for the Ruger, they tried them too and the word I got from the military types testing it was sloppy and loud with too many sharp edges. No idea how it would really stack up.

Didn't we the taxpayer, go in excess of $4000 a unit for those? So is there a fix for the poor mags or does the end user just have to put up with the problems?

the rifles themselves are what 2500-2800 and that is the Sako/Tika ones.
with the couple changes that where made for the Rangers and add on R&D im sure they where more than 2800 per unit all said and done.
but that is just the rifle.

i heard rumblings that all in for the entire package per Ranger the price was North of 6k per unit (case, tools, ect ect).
i havnt heard a concrete number, just rumours.

In your opinion was this a good choice for the Rangers and did the bureaucratic military procurement process actually work ? I believe the Harper gov was behind this one. Very slick rifle.

now keep in mind im just a slave in the galley manning the ore's, but i think the rifles are fantastic..... so far.
the magazine issues i had only happened with one magazine and it wasnt even my issued mag.
its just starting to get cold up here, im going to wait until its -40 to -50 and take it out and see how it works.
gun can be as pretty as it wants but if it wont work after being strapped to your back for 8 hours on a ski-do in -42 then it will be a waste.

on a related note my Ruger Scout has done the above and passes, so did my Lee Enfield.
ask me in January.

I've had a few come thru my shop from 4CRPG.
The threaded brass inserts in the rear of stock for the butt screws are being stripped from the stock when changing butt lengths.
Other than that I think they are a fine rifle for what are required of them. I just can't digest the price.

i m waiting for that test and while using in a boat to see how it goes i was planning to wait two full years of use to see the feedback. do not forget the komatik ride.

Certainly a good looking rifle . Even at 6000 bucks per unit ; it is really just a drop in the bucket for the military considering what it costs to keep the Armed Forces going . Good luck with the new rifle .

Just read the specs, they can’t seriously have bought 10lb .308 carbines for $4000-6000? They needed to test with guides and active rangers, not military.

they needed a Canadian company to build it therefore Ruger was not willing to give out. the tikka colt is a bargain for the beretta group not for us but glad the rangers got a new rifle but do not know it that one will fit the bill. tiime will tell. i can t be a ranger so i can only play with my own tikka lol ...

i believe jail time is what you get if you lose your gun.

There would be an MP and possibly NIS investigation into the circumstances of the loss. A significant incident report would go to NDHQ as well.

Jail time would only result if there was criminal or seriously negligent behaviour; if it was reasonably unavoidable (ie canoe tipping over) you would bear no liability. For the value of the rifle, you'd have to be exceedingly stupid or exceedingly desperate to make it disappear rather than just buying one.

Source: me, who's dealt with more than a few weapons losses at the unit, brigade and area levels. Indeed, almost that exact circumstance - a weapon was lost off a boat during an assault river crossing. No panic, the divers were called, it was recovered, and everyone got on with their lives. I expect the troop involved still hasn't lived it down, but that's the worst that happened. There was even some discussion over the need to do an SIR - technically, the weapon wasn't "lost," it was merely temporarily inaccessible.
