Hello everyone,

Yesterday I purchased my very first rifle ( S&W MP15 .223). While shopping for ammo, I came across a brand name Barnaul. The ammo for this make is relatively cheaper than other brands.

Can you folks please suggest if it will be a good match for my rifle or should I go different brand?

Also what grain will be perfect. I will primarily use the rifle for range and 3 gun competition.

Steel cases are hard on extractors. But the cost savings can be so big that you can replace an extractor and even a barrel once in awhile and be ahead.

Steel cases are coated, to prevent rust. If they are copper washed or zinc plated (copper or silver coloured) I use it without any concern.

If it has a lacquer coating, I avoid it. The lacquer can build up in the chamber and gum up the works. A disaster in competition.

Here is a 40,000 round test of steel cased ammo in AR15s:

^^^ as usual, Ganderite nailed it.

Congrats on your first AR!

Thanks for the reply. It answered my question and cleared lot of things.
I did some research and most people are in favor of steel ammo. I'm only planning to shoot 200-300 rounds at any given time so I don't see any reason why it can cause problems. I will make sure to clean the the rifle after every use.
Gotenda is selling 500 rounds for $179. I'll give it a shot.

BTW that was a really good article you shared. It gives some interesting perspectives and results.

Tenda also has brass cased .223 for $380/1000. There is zero reason to buy the Barnaul when American Eagle is available for that price.

My AR shoots 4" groups with American Eagle at 100 yards; it shoots less than 1" (sub MOA with my 55 gr. home loads. It has been years since I have shot Barnaul, but they shot almost as well as my home loads in a remington 78.

AE are schidt.

When I get a new gun, I normally buy a few different brands including cheaper ones, then off to the range to see which my gun likes, the tightest group wins cheap or not. Make sure to let barrel cool between brands, hope this helps.
