Cerakoting brand new Colt MRR 16”

Hello fellow CGN’ers;

I just picked up the Diemaco CC 16” MRR last weekend and couldn’t be happier with it.
Last few years I had a DDM4v5s in Mil-Spec+ which I loved but ended up getting rid of it in preference of having a piece of comparable Canadian hardware. The only thing I find on my MRR a little annoying is how easy it is to nick up. The brass deflector is already a bit marked up (brassed) with casings bouncing off it and another little spot on the hand guard has a small scratch. I know these are meant to take a beating but I prefer to have it protected. The thing as most folks understand with the newer IURs, including the MRR is that you require a special proprietary wrench to remove the barrel.

Given the barrel removal pain, do any of know where I could go to get my rifle treated with a Cerakote finish?
Does Colt Canada offer this service to civilian market? I know they manufacture these in the khaki cerakote but those are meant for non-commercial customers I believe. And if I can’t do it through CC, can you recommend a shop in South-West Ontario that either has the capability to remove the barrel and cerakote it or has the ability to somehow cerakote it without removing the barrel?

Thanks in advance!

Black Box Customs in Calgary could do it. They are top shelf guys, however they are not in Ontario. I'm sure you could ship it to them though.

CeraKote will not fare any better on the brass deflector. Many companies that apply CeraKote will completely remove the anodized finish which takes the hard surface layer of aluminum oxide off, which most of us that understand anodizing believe is a bad thing. I doubt the brass that is left on the shell deflector has broken the anodizing. Have you tried some copper removing solution such as Wipe Out applied to the deflector, it will remove any residual brass and will not harm the finish at all?

Thanks RWA-Technical & NoOneSpecial;
I will try copper removal on it.

I don’t know much about aluminum anodizing admittedly and initially thought not to put harsh solution to the outside surface.
If you suggest it won’t harm it, i’ll try a small amount of that on the deflector.

May hold off on Cerakoting for a few more months just to see.

Thanks again

Your in Ontario, so Casey at TacOrd is your best bet. I actually think his son does it. You might want to talk to him.

TNA is selling the econo-version of Colt Canada IUR wrench and it is quite affordable. I have one - I haven't actually used it but I think it will work just fine unless you are working in a real armourer shop that does thousands of installation and dissembling a year.

Just make sure your coater does not remove the hard anodization before cerakoting - anodization gives the aluminum the surface hardness vs cerakote is just a paint that resist certain amount of wear. It is a durable paint for colouring but not a substitute for treatment giving surface hardness. The coater should know enough to pay attention not to clog up the pin holes

FYI,the brass deflector will get marked up, no matter what finish you use. Just look at all the Swiss Arms rifles, they use similar paint. If it chips hard anodization, it will chip paint.

Brass marks will come off with just a bit of elbow grease, The first scratch is painful but not the end the world, I wouldn't refinish it just yet, wait until you put some real marks on the rifle before you spend the money.

Thanks for all the great info, I think i’ll Let it acquire more dings and scratches before spending the money.
As one of the guys at the shop said, my DD was more of a prom-queen and my CC is more of a bad-ass biker bi*tch lol.
Helluva visual transition but I’m already loving the CC after spending some time behind her

If they are doing it right it should only be a light sandbasting at half the pressure required for steel parts enough to rough up the surface to ensure the paint sticks. But Cerakote is still only a paint and although it's very tough it can and will wear. I would use and enjoy your toy some wear ads character to some firearms.

Wast of money. Latter sale as is and by a new one. Anyway new technologies are developing very quick. Look at Anderson RF85 and what they promissing.

Put some moleskin patches on it (band aid section) than some tape. It will not leave residue but should add a mm or so of "protection" against hitting directly on the surface

Just cut a square of the fuzzy side of some velcro (good stuff with 3M adhesive) and stick it on the deflector, it will protect the finish and can be removed easily.

Cerakote is awesome stuff though, I wouldn't hesitate to get the rifle coated inside and out (it goes on very thin). My PWS AR was factory cerakote'd and after 5000 rounds it still looked new on the inside. It also has some lubricity to it so on the inside of the rifle it will help the BCG slide. It's great stuff.

Thanks all, I’m gonna likely just put a roll of electrical tape in my kit and slap a little piece of it on each time I hit the range.
Seems like the simplest solution and can remove it after use. Lots of helpful information here and I will certainly look to the local contacts you folks have provided here (thanks RebelRouser) for when I’m ready to cerakote. Will also ensure they don’t remove the anodized layer. Only reason I’m in preference of doing it locally and not shipping it, is so I can have a faster turnaround. Once I figure out how to post pics here, i’ll share my set up. Cheers and thanks again!

If your interested I know who did the Cerakote on the Colt Canada C8A4 rifles. He is here in Ontario and i had him do mine the same. Magpul green

Jonesy67, that rifle looks excellent!
Identical to mine...minus the treatment.
Love that the markings are visible.
I’m assuming this Cerakote guy didn’t strip the anodization?

What’s the approximate cost and how long did you have to part with it?

Thanks!

The person who did my rifle did the CC so I hope he knew not to take the anodizing off of it. I am local and he had my rifle for maybe a week. I installed the C9 brake for s%&ts and giggles. If I remember it was around the $250 mark when he was done. I couldn't do it myself and thought that was a fair price. It really does make lettering and roll marks very readable. I couldn't do just upper as I felt a little ghetto like that.

PM me if you want the info to contact him.

Frank at Cerakote BC did this one, turned out great.
