Anybody knows any ballistic info on the new 6.8 the US army with be adapting?

They were saying it is not the 6.8 spc

I don’t even think the army knows the ballistic information other than it will be bigger and betterer than 5.56 in every way imaginable.

If they want armour penetration like they are babbling right now, they need to have harder penetrators or faster speed or more mass. Otherwise it won't defeat the cheapo ceramic plates proliferated everywhere.

6.5 or something that has low recoil probably will not be able to do that out of a carbine barrel length unless they use expensive penetrator materials like tungsten - but that solution already exists in 5.56.

I am not objecting to 6.5 or something, it will definitely deliver more range, just not game changing update in armour penetration.

They aren't going to spend billions of dollars replacing 5.56 with just another brass case round. I'm guessing this is referring to the new case telescoped round developed by textron. The belt fed incarnation alone is half the weight of a saw....I haven't seen the carbine version fired yet.

Honestly the cost benefit just doesn't make sense otherwise.

The 6.8 are superior to the 6.5. The SPC is used by the US special forces and many armed forces in the world as it is a fabulous cartridge. Many who do not know much about it would be happy with it for a hunting round. I have an SPC and Wolverine in 6.8’s which are perfect n an AR small frame format.

Agreed, I used to have a Ruger mini in 6.8 SPC its a handy bush rifle capable to take most North America's game animals with the right bullet.

Some people call the SPC ll a short 270 don't know why it isnt't popular in Canada but my guess will be it is most suitable to use in AR platforms and its being restricted up here, saw a lot of videos on Youtube people hunting deers, hogs and even black bear with the SPC ll.

The real issue is that:
  • 5.56 does not work that well (almost always need 2 solid hits to get a quick kill)
  • 7.62 is an optimized 30-06 which was designed to stop cavalry charge ( like 303 British, 8mm Lebel, 8mm Mauser and 7.92 Mosin-Nagant but unlike 6mm Navy, 6.5 Swedish, 6.5 Carcano or 6.5 Japanese)
So there has to be a better solution between a varmint and a large game cartridge.
For all practical purpose anything from 6mm BR - type up to 270 Win - type cartridge is a significant improvement if it's well engineered.
(276 Peterson and 7mm British would have probably done a better job than 7.62 NATO as the FN FAL in 7mm British was controllable in full-auto)

I heard they are going back to the 308 since it has a proven track record of getting the job done.

Easy to load, accurate, and deadly in the right hands.

I have a 6.8 mini. One of the first platforms for the 6.8 spc thus in the original chamber not spc II.

They were only available for a few years and in the closer tolerance 580 series. Think of it as a 300 blackout or 7.62x39 plus 100-200 ft/sec in a 2moa platform. For the 100lb blacktail at less than 200 yards.

We will see, but my answer to the 223 for deer, threads that come up about weekly.

Back to the OP, their procurement process is only slightly less cumbersome and corrupt as ours. Almost certainly many millions will be spent, pockets lined, and then they will drop the concept.
