SLR tips, tricks and observations

Mine had the tightest barrel extension to upper fit that I’ve ever seen. Used aeroshell grease but required heat on the upper and a fair bit of force to get it on. Not to say that this is a flaw, just tight tolerances. I prefer this to a loose fitment between the 2, whether or not it would affect accuracy or anything else is a matter of opinion.

OMG .... getting the barrel to seat was tight. I think it turned out just fine ....

Thats a ###y build! What barrel length? 18.6? What handguard is that? I love the slant on it

Mines high 400's and its annodized, barrel fit is snug
Put a little bit of grease on the extension and a little on the inside of the upper. Went together very nicely.

After I got my sets cerakoted, I needed to use a rubber mallet to tap the barrel into place.

My receiver set it Serial# 13? Even with no cerakote the barrel fitment was extremely tight. Likewise I greased it and tried the rubber mallet and got it just to the point where the index pin was starting into the slot in the upper receiver. Could not (reasonably) tap it the rest of the way.

Instead of continuing to beat on it I simply threaded the barrel nut on and tightened it to finish drawing the barrel in.

Not overly difficult to figure out but the fun began when I tried to remove the barrel after I'd used it for a while. Ended up setting up the receiver and barrel in my press and using a hardwood dowel to push the barrel out.

Before installing the different barrel I polished the inside of the receiver where the barrel extension inserts just enough to loosen the fitment up to the point where I could get the barrel in with nothing more than a gentle tap. Probably should have done this in the first place when I realized how snug it was.

I've never had a barrel install so tight in my life. That being said I think I'd rather have it fit a little too snug than fit too loose and simply rely on pressure from tightening the barrel nut to keep it positioned.

I installed a Maple Ridge barrel on mine. I believe they are from IDI barrel blanks.
I ended up putting the upper in the oven at 200F and the barrel in the freezer for 10-15mins. It fit together nicely and I quickly torqued the nut on after fitting the barrel. I polished the surface area of the barrel with emery cloth beforehand, and coated it with a film of Nikel coat. my serial is around the 300 mark.

Are they that tight ? I ordered one of these also lol

Seems to be the case with most who commented on it. For mine, there was no way the barrel was fitting without removing material. My method allowed me to slip it right in, there was still a small amount of resistance, but it fully seated before i threaded the nut on. I've put about 400 rds through mine with no issues at all, I'm very pleased with this and don't regret the investment like some have on the 1st production models. My # is around the 300 mark.

Awesome, thanks for the reply !

I'll use that method then if its that tight !

Just assembled 2 6.5 Grendel’s. Took one out to shoot and fires, picks up another round but doesn’t make it all the way to lock up. I have to pull back the charging handle a bit and let it loose and then it will go into battery. Did this with 2 completely different mags I was trying out.

Brass didn’t seem to eject very aggressively, flew out about 5 feet directly to right, almost 90 degrees. But it was positive ejection.

Everything is very tight, wondering if it just needs to wear in a bit but also wondering if the gas is a little low and not compressing the buffer spring enough for a forceful reload.

The receiver has zero to do with being under gassed.

Your system is undergassed... is the gas block adjustable?

I used 400 grit emery cloth on the mating surface of the barrel just to smooth it up, otherwise it was almost like a machine finish. I think that along with some anti seize (I used Jet-Lube Nikal) will make the difference if I ever need to remove the barrel.
