I was thinking about getting a Hammond game getter for my 270, but I need some no1 buck to go with it. What's an economical way to get that

My first idea was to cut up some shells, but all the cheap stuff is 00 buck, so is a lot of the other 12ga buckshot. I don't need a whole 25lb bag like a reloader might buy, so what's a cheap source of #1 buck? A brand /type of commonly available 12 or 20ga shell would work, or if someone reloads #1 buck and wants to hook me up with a big handful that would be great too! (of course I'd be willing to pay)

No.1 buckshot I had to buy state side in 8 pound bottles I think they are. I could not find it in canada
Sorry and forget about cheep buckshot when you have to ship
Cheers

May be cheaper to buy some factory buckshot shells and take them apart.

At least until you find you are using the right size shot and that you like the game getter enough to buy some bulk buckshot.

Anyone making shells with #1 shot? I haven't checked my lgs yet but looking online I see almost everything is #00. (with the odd 000 and #4)

Rem loads #1 buck but that's like buying a car for the hubcaps?

But if you only need 4 hub caps, and the only other way to get them is to get a whole shipping container full for multiple times the cost of the car... Yes buying a box is an expensive way to get shot, but if it's the only way to get a small amount for a small price...

5 rds with 1oz shot should give me 50+ pellets, which is likely enough to figure out whether I like the game getter...

All the major manufacturers make a #1 load in a few varieties. I have a bunch of Winchester 3'' #1 I keep on hand for whatever. 24 pellets in each shotshell.

FTR the brown Hilty gun blanks were the most accurate. If you were closer I'd give you a handfull of #1 to try.I have a 5lb box of Hornady but I think they no longer make it.Expect about 1.5-2" at 50ft usually low of the crosshairs /900fps a little grease or better yet Allox before sizing and shooting prevents leading.

I buy Hornaday "0" buckshot in .32 cal, comes in a 5 lbs box. I only use them for coyote close in. Longshot powder, 2 3/4" and 3" reloads.

How’d you make out with this Suther? Find any #1? Did you form an opinion on the GG?

I know I’m late to the party, but if I were in your shoes, I’d just go with the next size up, that you can find a box of on the shelf. You’re swaging them down to the correct size anyway. Going up to single 0 buck would only be adding 8 grains of weight. The benefit is a slightly longer flat surface to engage the rifling, so potentially more accuracy. But being heavier, a hair less speed, and greater drop. Personally, I prefer the slower, heavier option for getting small game. Consider a CCI Quiet is 40 grains moving at 710fps, and is just perfect for grouse, squirrels, and cotton tails. So your single 0 or even 00 is going to be in that speed range, but with a pellet weighing 48-53 grains.

I’ve got a few .30 cal game getters, and Hammond recommends 00 buck. But at deer camp one year I forgot to replenish my kit, and a buddy only had 000 for pilfering. Weight wise, that’s a jump of about 15 grains. It was just a hair harder to pound through the swage, but I *think* it shot more accurately. (Only had 2 shells worth to play with, and didn’t have my usual set up like at home to directly compare, but it seemed that way.) Holdover at 10 yards didn’t change.

I like to keep a little “glasses” size flat head screw driver in the same pocket as the game getter. My big fat fingers have a hard time prying the spent shells out, so it comes in handy.

To be honest though, I’ve largely left the game getter behind since I started reloading. Having to “rebuild” the cartridge for a follow up shot just got a little tiresome. I prefer now to just carry 3 or 4 loaded mouse farts ready to go. If you have some basic reloading tools, you may find something here: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...rt-recipes?p=12129034&viewfull=1#post12129034

I see that # 1 buck is .30 cal . Lee make a round ball mould for .310 dia balls , if that helps.
Lee # is ,,,,,,,,,, " LEE-310-6 C" . This is a 6 cavity mould. .310 is still smaller than the next
size buckshot , which is "0" buck @ .32 dia.

Or read the manufacturer's recommended chart.
