Good Day. I have a Marlin 45-70gs with open sights. Eyes are aging. Any suggestions on a laser sight that will take the recoil. I shoot 430 gr bear loads. Will shoot within 100 yds. Don't want to spend to much.

I have had a Trijicon reflex sight on my Marlin for years always works never failed. I also shoot heavy bear bullets.

There’s nothing wrong with a red dot except it looks odd on a lever gun. But it’s your rig so do what you want.

I would definitely recommend a high quality name brand optic to handle the recoil though. The Reflex mentioned above is a great choice. Trijicon and Aimpoint are ones I would trust. The last thing you need is some bargain brand crapping the bed when you’re miles from civilization.

Bear in mind that most RDSs have no built in magnification.

Have you tried a good set of peep sights?

I'd love a red dot on my 45-70, but it's a bush gun and gets beat on, dirty, wet, etc. I went with some peeps and am very happy with them. Super quick and easy target acquisition.

Also, any red dot I'd trust to handle the 45-70 recoil is going to be expensive. Peep sights are cheap in comparison. You could likely get a fiber optic front post too if your vision is an issue.

I have Aimpoints and Eotechs that i swap around on mine . Buy once , cry once . Forget about Vortex red dots or any other cheap stuff although i do have a Bushnell TR-25 i think is the model and it keeps on running on shotguns .

Holosun puts out some pretty good red dots if you don't want to drop $800+ on a Aimpoint or Eotech.
Have one on a BLR and the battery lasts a long long time.
Have a Skinner aperture on my Chiappa Alaskan takedown that came with the gun that is a lot better than any rd.
No switching on and off crap or batteries to fool with.
Even an old guy like me can see the Skinners HiVis front sight blade.

Running a Leupold Deltapoint Pro on an 1895 ABL, 300-405gr loads and no issues so far. Now that the Mrs. has decided she wants that I’m going for another.

Planning on an RMR on an SBL so good to hear someone has already tried that.

I had one on my chiappa for a bit when I still had it. It was ok, but I found the height just wasn’t right for me. If. I was looking for something again I’d look for as low as possible, like maybe a pistol reflex etc. sure you could add some cheek weld but it wasn’t my style. Now a pistol reflex mounted as low as possible, that could be awesome. I think Burris makes a fastfire Mount for the 95.

Yeah I have the same gun qith the same sights. That rear aperature with the fiber optic front post is excellent.

And as mentioned above, you can buy anything you want directly from skinner.
