Have a question about the the controlled deer hunt in Ont.

I have a buck tag and just received my controlled deer hunt seal for antlered and antlerless. Does the controlled seal allow me shoot both bucks or doe's?

Awesome. Thanks, I've been wondering the exact same thing.
My nephew that I hunt with said that as well, but it's nice to hear it from another sourcel.

Your Controlled Deer Hunt Validation Tag, will state 'Valid for an Antlered or Antlerless Deer' in assigned WMU.
Yes, you are allowed to shoot a Buck or a Doe, if your Validation Tag states that, good hunting..

Sweet! I wish they made it clear in the regs, they only say you must have both a deer tag and control seal.

The control hunt seal as you call it, just gives you the right to participate/hunt in the control hunt WMU you were successful in, it is not a game seal/tag (you can't attach it to a deer)... You can use your original buck tag as you call it for a doe or buck during the control hunt WMU assigned only....
Just to be clear, with the information from your post, you can only shoot one deer as you only have one deer seal.....(of course you can shoot more deer if you are party hunting) but with the information you posted, only one deer (tag) for you this year....

Are you guys sure about this?
Conservation Officer in 76A has twice confirmed that I needed an Antlerless deer tag to take a doe.
Me and others in the group applied for doe tags but without success.
I wish it were true as I had a doe in my sights this year.
It goes without saying that if this info is wrong, it might be an expensive mistake.

Ontario Hunting Regulation Summary page 70:
* Some Controlled Hunt Validation Tags in units marked with an
asterisk (*) are valid for ANTLERED DEER ONLY

WMU 76A is one of those noted areas.

Read and Abide by what is stated on the Controlled Deer Hunt Validation Tag for your WMU

The controlled hunt seal overrides whatever your regular antlered/antlerless deer tag says. You abide by the Who, What, Where, and When on the controlled seal as it's sort of a special permission slip.

You can apply for regular season antlerless in WMU 76A and be denied, but then apply for the controlled hunt in WMU 90 and get a controlled seal that would let you take antlered or antlerless. You would then be using your antlered tag on an antlerless deer. That's why the controlled seal must be with you during the hunt as you'll be guilty until proven innocent if a CO sees you have a "buck" tag on a doe.

My Controlled Deer Hunt Validation Tag for 76A...claims "Valid for an Antlered or Antlerless deer in WMU 76A from Nov. 5 to Nov. 9"

I know I need to buy a buck tag to take a buck.
Just like I would need a doe tag to take a doe.
The validation tag just says I can hunt either animal in that WMU if I possess the correct tag for either.

If your validation tag said valid for antlered or antlerless, than as long as you have the accompanying deer licence(buck tag) then you should have been able to take that doe you saw. Maybe the CO didn't know you were in the controlled hunt as it looks in the regulations that rifles are allowed as well in 76A. Guess I have to stop calling it a shotgun hunt. Lol. Maybe there are special circumstances in your WMU.

In Ontario applicants for the controlled hunt if successful will receive their validation tag which will state antlered or anterless and antlered for the 5 day period you are successful to hunt in. You must then purchase your deer hunting tag prior to the hunt. The confusing thing with this system is you could put an over the counter deer tag on a doe. The controlled hunt tag only needs to be with the hunter and isn’t required to be affixed to the deer. Then to add more confusion a C.O. infoming hunters their combo tag is only good for bucks. An application for a doe tag in the controlled areas is only good for bow season. Hopefully the new system is much clearer than the old one.
