I've sold several guns in the past month and each time the CFP have asked me for the buyer's phone number. Luckily I happened to have it the first time I was asked and I then requested it when getting info from the buyer on the sales after that. Is this something new? I hadn't sold a gun in a while before this but I don't remember ever being asked for phone numbers before.

Been happening to me for quite some time now, the last two years at least. Have always had it on hand when I call in, so don't know what the consequences of not having it would be.

They ask but readily admit it's not required. Data mining is most likely. They ended up having my cell phone number although I've never provided it.

Not required by law.

Nothing more than data mining, for what ever reason

Shawn

Anytime I've asked, I've been told that it's used as an additional preliminary verification. Name and PAL# are obviously on the front of the card, and address is no go due to privacy laws. Apparently if you give them a phone number they can tell you whether or not that belongs to the PAL holder and it's kosher.

No, I don't believe everything the CFC tells me, just relaying what I've been told.

Same here...been providing it for the last couple of years...always ask buyers/trades for it and give it too...they have all that info anyway..costs me nothing and gets it done..no tin foil hat here on this occasion...lol

Never been asked ever. I don't normally have it in hand. If asked I would refer them to the individual on the other side of the transaction. Bad enough you have to go through the birthdate, where you were born, address every time you do a transfer.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I didn't see the need to start a new one.
It's been nearly a decade since I've purchased a restricted and my memory is a little fogged.
When purchasing from a dealer and they provide the reference number, do I need to call the CFO or will the CFO call me?

Usually no (at least in Ontario).

Thank you!
So should they be calling me, right?

No there should be no contact by the CFO. The sale to you and the transfer from the dealer to your name takes place. Once the dealer gets notified of the transfer they will ship the gun to you. The CFO will in time send you a letter confirming the transfer and later, usually a registration certificate.

Much thanks!
The last time I purchased a restricted from a dealer was when Milarm had the VZ58 for $375...been a long time!

Did a restricted transfer today and asked for a phone #. Takes forever to get through on the line. It kept hanging up on me saying agents all busy.
