Looking to mount a red dot on 686 and having a hard time finding a plate or rail for the optic (rmr type)... has anyone here done it?

You're not to be looking for a rail as much as a base for your optic that mounts to the slot that your rear sight is mounted in, I've done it with a 686 and a Burris Fastfire III and it makes for a very neat solution. The top of the revolver is actually drilled and tapped for these bases under the rear sight mount, ALLCHIN is one manufacturer that offers a base like that. Very easy installation with no permanent changes to the firearm.

Pleasure R&S ... with the rail you'll also require a rail mount adapter for the optic, the two combined (the rail and the rail mount) will bring your optics considerably higher from the gun than it would be with the Allchin mount

Thanks for the info
Someone also suggested the chiappa rhino model with a small rail on top

Will the Allchin also work with a S&W model 66 Combat Magnum?

According to the Allchin description in the link above it will fit any pre-drilled S&W handgun, so you'll have to remove the rear sight mount and check to see if your Model 66 came from the factory drilled and tapped, if so it should work I imagine

All their sight bases are the same, the real early ones, -2, etc have 2 screw holes, later ones have three, forget the time frame, for the scope bases I have sold , it was suggested to drill and tap the 3 rd hole in the top strap.
that is the wegier (spelling?) scope base, same idea, pull the open sight off, screw on the weaver base

Are you referring to the Weigand mounts ?
