Best budget rimfire rifle

I have a buddy who is thinking about buying a cheap .22lr for magpies etc. He's not looking to spend much and would be putting a scope on it. What are his options?

I would suggest a Marlin model 60 tube fed .22 - it works and its cheap you can even find the all black model which is what i have

Thanks for the reply. Although I haven't asked him yet, I think he's leaning towards something with a mag. Single shot might be an option also as he currently uses an air rifle.

I'll give another vote for the marlin rimfire rifles, they're affordable and accurate. I have owned both the bolt XT series and the 795, they are great shooters and both have magazine models.

Least expensive, scope-able repeater, bolt action? Maybe a older Cooey 600 (tube-mag fed)

Least expensive but accurate auto-loader? Marlin 795

Depends on the "budget" itself. Old Cooey single shots can be had under $100 without looking too hard, but adding a scope isn't really an option. I think for a modern-ish production gun, maybe the Marlin XTs or Savage Mark IIs. If there is a little more $ to throw around, one of the new Savage B series would be my suggestion, though I've never fired one. (I have had several Savage rimfires though, mostly decent accuracy)

Keep an eye out for black friday sales, you can typically find a savage scope combo for under $300. Best bet IMO

Not sure what you consider a budget rifle but I'll suggest a marlin xt-22 , they start around $220 , the mags are inexpensive and plentiful, fantastic trigger and very accurate

Im partial to a rem 597 with target barrel. Goes on sale for 249 on cabelas often. Or get a sport barrel and included scope. Been shooting barrel of bullets and it runs great

I just got a rem 597. I wanted a semi, hold open bolt after last round, box mag, good sturdy feel and no mag size restriction. It cost $270 but for an extra $30 it would have came with a mounted scope and no iron sights. So far its great, although I've only put around 120 shots through it. I only had one failure to extract.

Fyi they are 399 plus tax currently.

5000 rounds plus through the marlin 795,and i love everything about it other than the super cheap and impossible not to break trigger guard.

Another vote for the 795 , it is an accurate little gun. I installed a Mcarbo trigger and spring kit and the improvement was significant.
