Can anyone comment on how far in the cleaning rods on Mauser K98k are supposed to screw. I have what I am fairly certain is an original cleaning rod. Mine only screws in about a quarter turn before it won’t go any further, it stays in the rifle fine just not sure if this normal.

Mine goes in 5 turns, maybe the threads on the cleaning rod or the threads on the receptacle(sort of a square nut) on the inside of the stock are buggered.

Ii was really hard to get the rod screwed in at all originally but now it goes in easy a quarter turn. Could the nut be all plugged up? If so is there an easy way of cleaning it

You would have to take the action out of the stock, the square nut sits in a slot in the wood.
You may have to use a tap to clean the threads,4mm. Are the threads on the cleaning rod OK,before taking the gun apart I would find a 4mm nut and see if it treads onto the rod.

Mine seems to be stuck with dried on gunk, possibly cosmoline. I might try using acetone, WD-40 or bore cleaner to help free it up, is this a good or bad idea?

For anyone interested I got the lug out after quite a battle. The lug is quite rusted, any idea where I can find a spare? Its the two hole model.

I'd just clean the rust off and retap it. 8-32 threads I'm pretty sure.

Worked like a charm. To anyone with a similar problem though note the thread pattern is NOT 8x32 it’s 4mm with a .7mm pitch
